My husband and I stayed at the Doubletree Coconut Grove for two nights to attend a wedding in Miami. The location is very good and convenient to most Miami hot spots. The Coconut Grove area seems to be a dying area however and shops were closed and two restaurants indicated they were moving as business had been down. Across the street from the hotel is a grocery store which has everything you can imagine in the way of a gourmet grocery--it was fantastic. There were fresh veggies, pastries, wines and even pre made sandwiches and meals which looked fabulous.
Most rooms at the hotel have a balcony and ours faced the bay but the balcony contained huge obstructions about 3 feet high. Beware of them. Only some rooms contain the balcony obstructions. On the balcony (we couldn't sit out there because if we were seated we would face the concrete wall obstruction) there was a nice breeze and the view was fabulous had it not been for the concrete obstructions.
The rooms definitnely need updating but were comfortable. The bathroom is small and the shower head flows but a trickle. There is another sink in the bedroom portion of the room but no mirron above it!
There is only one ice machine in the lobby area. There is valet parking only at $20 per day which is pricey if you are going to be going in and out and tipping the staff. Breakfast buffet was $15.95 per person and included coffee or juice--I don't know where the other reader got the $40 figure. There are other braekfast items offered for an average of $10.
Last but not least there was a huge "palmetto" bug (roach) in my room on the last evening before we checked out. I reported it and was told sorry but there was no other accommodation suggested. Because we were checking out, I did not pursue the issue.
All in all, if you are looking for an average type hotel which is priced average, this is the place. The staff were pleasant and the hotel appeared clean, but the roach was another story.
