Me and 3 of my girlfriends stayed at Chelsea from June 11-15, 2009. We rented a van and Chelsea suggested a public parking garage 2/3 blocks up. We did not move that car until we left to go back home on the 15th. Great advice! In fact, don't bring a car. Check-in was speedy and free of any problems. No lost reservations or anything like that.
We liked the room decor. Rooms are small, but we didn't care because we didn't spend much time in the rooms. The lighting is dim, but I think people are exaggerating a bit. We didn't have any issues with getting dressed because the lighting was horrible. Maybe if you spend too much time in the room, you'll have a lighting problem. Our room was located on the 1st floor at the very end of the hallway. We didn't hear any noise or walk down any creepy hallways like the other floors, so maybe ask for a 1st floor room. Again we weren't in the room long, and we slept in and went to bed late so I guessed we missed any noise. We were never awaken/disturbed by any noise.
We liked (and used) that Chelsea had small discount cards for different activities (parasailing, etc.). During happy hour, they served a free drink to guests. You had to choose from a limited selection, nevertheless, it was free. Everyday they gave us free beach towels to use which was great. Use the towel on the beach, and give them back the dirty towels, love it!
Hotel close to everything, but not on the busy street of Ocean Drive. We loved that we were only 2 blocks from Ocean, but still in the mix of things. Great pizza joint directly across the street. Within walking distance of Clubs SoBe Live, Mansion, & BED.
The only complaint is we found 2 bugs. 3 of the 4 of us were deathly afraid. We found 1 huge roach crawling about and 1 dead waterbug(?) in the shower. 1 of the girls got the first bug, but we made the receptionist guy come get the waterbug. It's disappointing when you come home from a long day longing to get in the shower and you step in the bathroom and see a nasty bug. Or you see a big bug crawling around and hoping it won't crawl into your luggage and clothes.
At the time we went, Chelsea was running a price special so we paid about $122 per person for 4 nights. We will be returning to South Beach at the end of July for a week. Chelsea isn't running any specials this time so we will be looking for other hotels, but we would stay at Chelsea again if we were staying for 4 nights or less.
I would recommend this hotel for young folks (21-35) who are in SoBe for pleasure, and young romantic couples on a budget.
