“reasonably priced hotel with good location, decent size rooms and a very nice staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2012

We stayed at the Savoy in South Beach for 3 nights, arriving on Christmas Day. There were some logistics to be sorted out on the first day for the 2 rooms we reserved about 4 months prior. The holiday may have been a contributing factor but the staff made great efforts to fix things that were not as we expected.

The hotel is well located. We didn't touch our car throughout our stay, walking to a variety of restaurants that were within a few blocks. (We went to News Cafe twice during our stay for Excellent breakfast/lunch- about 4 blocks away)

The hotel has 2 buildings. Both were built in the 30's and have been condo at various times during the Savoy's history. The room configurations are different but many are large (separate bedroom and living room area, like a typical one bedroom apartment)There is a kitchen area in many with decent size fridge (for hotel) and microwave ovens. Many (empty) cabinets. The decor is Art Deco in places, somewhat shabby other places.
The showers have fair pressure and good range of temps, once you figure out how to use them- some seem like combination lock to operate but if you adjust a bit (or ask staff for guidance) a decent shower can be had.

Overall, the Savoy has a Very personal feel. We learned names of many of the staff people in our three days (not the typical case in bigger hotels) Paula & Richard were helpful at the front desk. Berney (?sp)- she makes great frozen drinks. Sergio was attentive as a beach chair handler & Jessela (?sp) made us feel like VIPs on the beach, serving cocktails & lunch.

Carlos, the room manager, showed that he really cared that we leave the hotel with a positive impression. He stood behind those words, effectively ironing out our minor concerns. Carlos is a major reason to consider the Savoy for your next visit to South Beach.

Room Tip: 321 has large living room area, separate bed room and 2 full baths. 325 has beautiful view of ocean...

Let's summarize the positive first. This hotel is located close to all the attractions, yet is far enough from all the action of the Ocean Drive. It offers 2 swimming pools and direct access to the beach. There is also a restaurant on site if you need to grab something quick.

Now the negative. There is only valet parking and it is $30.00 per day plus there is $15.00 resort fee that you can't opt out of. I booked one bedroom suite for a family of 3 but got a standard room instead. The clerk said that this room had a terrace and an ocean view which would be preferred to a suite overlooking parking lot. So we asked the hotel to bring a rollaway bed which made our room look like a disaster zone. What the clerk failed to mention was that our room was right next to the elevator and stairs. So not only we heard people coming and going until all hours of the night but we also heard the elevator. After having unpacked all our bags we did not want to waste the time to look for another hotel since we only booked it for 2 nights but we were very disappointed. Upon check out we were offered to have the resort fee credited to the account but the final bill still came out to over $300.00 per night and our accommodations were not worth that much. So I highly recommend being very specific about all you requests because I certainly did not get what I paid for. Quite a disappointment for my family.

Holiday Greetings from Miami Beach!

Thank you for sharing your recent experience. We are glad you enjoyed the hotel's location and serene pool & beach area. We apologize for your disappointment regarding valet. It is somewhat customary in this area, however. Secondly, we are sorry that we fell short of your expectation in your suite.

We would love the opportunity to host you once again and I can personally assist with your next reservation and offer you a complimentary upgrade (upon availability).

Happy New Year!

Average for the price of £163 a night. The room was lovely with 3 balconies, all of which had chairs. The bed was very comfortable and we had two bathrooms. The kitchen area was excellent in that it had fridge, dishwasher....(DISHWASHER and no pots) and microwave and lots of cupboards - all of which were empty except for 4 plates and 4 plastic cups. There was an ice bucket, two glasses and a bottle opener. There was no kettle, toaster, any cutlery of any kind. I had read that there wasn't any cutlery before we booked and I emailed and asked should I bring some. I was told no they would be provided. I asked Mary at reception (she was really nice and helpful). They delivered two cups, two bowls and 4 packets of plastic cutlery (complete with paper napkin/salt and pepper). I was glad I had taken travel kettle. This is in complete contrast to our next stay at the Atlantic Hotel in Fort Lauderdale where everything was provided.

I don't quite get the point of having a lovely suite with kitchen and all the facilities with no pots or cutlery. If the reason is that people steal them then I would suggest that the hotel take a refundable deposit. I have to admit it was very disapointing from that aspect when there is a fantastic Publix supermarket down the road. We have spent the past year losing weight and did not want to have a 3 week holiday eating out every day - hence why we choose this hotel.

Couple of Gripes -
Resort Fee - there is a pool - no resort (which we knew and didn't use pool or anything else) The area around the pool did need some attention as someone else has pointed out.
Disturbed two nights - one night from equipment (possibly air conditioning - which they sorted) 2nd night from loud music at 2 in the morning from room underneath. Again the night security man did ask them to turn off the music - which they did.
I had read reviews which said ask for high floor because of noise above. I followed the advice asked for and got room on 3rd floor - we still did not escape the noise. I think this is a symptom of an old hotel.

Good Points
Hotel is in a good part of Ocean Drive - it was generally quiet at night time unlike the other hotels on Ocean Drive. I am so glad we did not stay on 'the strip' only stay there if you like loud music.
Our Room No 321 was lovely as you can see from the photos I have added.
The staff were very helpful

The Savoy is very nice and clean. The staff was extremely friendly. Two pools...cool and warm...warm was very nice. Awesome beach access. The beach chairs and umbrella were a nice feature that we enjoyed, but would have preferred to have the option to pay for these rather than having them automatically added to our bill.

The sitting area of our 2-room suite was very sparsely furnished and not very welcoming. It would have been nice to have been permitted to have our 3 sons share a room with us rather than having to get a second room.

Great South Beach location. Directly next to the action without being i the middle of it.

We liked the quieter location, below 5th street and while the rooms were not highly sound proof it was still a comfortable stay because of the general friendly atmosphere. 2 beautiful older buildings with guest rooms that create a very nice courtyard complemented by the 2 pools and small outdoor eating terrace. It is obvious they are putting extra TLC into this hotel and they seem to be refurbishing rooms at a gradual pace, it is a worthy investment given the charm. Wish the beds had more of a mattress topper though. There is a family owned feel to this hotel and I found that very positive, not glitzy or formal but respectful and careful- I would stay agin without hesitation. The beach and 2 chairs included for Savoy guests was fantastic!
Oh wait, one big detraction is there are no in-room movies to rent! We love to do that on vacation...wish there were even dvd players to use even if they don't want to involve the whole system...oh well, there's always HGTV.

Room Tip: Ask for a recently refurbished room, facing the courtyard

Room 209 is great, view of the ocean, 3 balconies, 2 bathrooms. Will recommend for sure! Towels and chairs are nice on the beach. Very quiet this time of the year, so relaxing. Close to many great restaurants and shopping.

We recently stayed at the Savoy and had a wonderful experience. The service was upbeat and pleasant and the facilites were very clean. The two pools were well maintained, one nicely heated and the other a little cooler and more refreshing. The view of the ocean and the location right on the beach was perfect.
