Hotels to me are simply a place to lay your head for a few hours while you're out enjoying where you are. But I couldn't help but spend more time at the Lord Balfour. We were looking for some place a little more cool but with good value for the money while we stayed in Miami Beach, and we got it in the Lord Balfour. It just opened three months ago after extensive renovations -- it kind of reminded me a little bit of Vegas, but near the beach. We stayed in a king room, and while it was teensy, it was gorgeous -- and we managed to fit our big suitcases in there without tripping all over them. There were plenty of fluffy towels, a couple of robes, and pairs of slippers. The shower has both a water-saving handheld nozzle, and a rainfall showerhead, which made the pressure a little better than many places I've stayed. The WiFi worked perfectly, and there were little touches like a coffeemaker with Starbucks coffee, and yummy-smelling luxe Etro toiletries in the bathroom. A shower gel may have come home with me. The hotel is just a short walk from the beach, and the front desk will give you as many beach towels as you like. They're actually good-sized towels -- not little bath towels. The lobby has a bar (hopefully more people are taking advantage of it, because crickets were chirping at the bar when we were there), but the one amenity we and many other guests enjoyed was a giant dispenser of ice citrus water that was always kept topped up. It was nice to come in from the heat and the humidity and cool off. Some days it had limes in it, another day oranges. (Note to Lord Balfour staff: we liked the lime the best.) There was a basic but lovely continental breakfast included in our room price. NO donuts -- yay! Instead, there was a wide array of gorgeous pastries, a selection of yogurt, and fruit (pineapple and grapefruit), including coffee, tea, and milk. It was a little inconsistent a couple of days during our stay (pineapple not available, and not tasting overly fresh when it was; no yogurt on a couple of days), which I thought was not keeping with the spectacular service we'd experienced at the hotel. The concierge, Dilip, is a long-time area resident. We didn't take advantage of his knowledge, but in speaking with him, I got the impression he has a ton of ideas about all kinds of out-of-the-way things to see and do. He gave us a pass to go to Nikki Beach. The Lord Balfour is south of fifth on Ocean Drive, so it's on the quiet side. But it's just a short walk to all the action. We loved our stay at the hotel.
