Well, we are back from the trip, and the charter with Miami Sailing was a success. They were organized, pleasant, accommodating and eager to go sailing. Being a two person team, they were able to sail and prepare food at the same time. This was a big advantage over single operator charters, as it allows real food to be prepared down below, and keeps the skipper free to concentrate on driving the boat.
They offer a 4ksb for budget charter, but will offer upgrade to the Bene 46.1 (Bruce Farr design) for a little more $ if available. Definitely recommended for performance, but either would be a safe platform for a day of fun.
Their location was convenient (Miami Beach Marina), especially since we were staying in South Beach. We got oriented, and started snacking on fruit, cheese and meats while we motored out the Cut, tacked upwind for an hour (winds N15-20, rolling 3-5ft waves), then bore away back down to reenter Miami Harbor to motor past the shipping terminals and gawk at the city before heading under the Rickenbacker Bridge. We saw a bunch of 49ers returning from practice (lots of international teams with coaches), and the first foiling Moth I'd seen live (not a video).
We traded stories and told lies & jokes while lazily reaching in Biscayne Bay. The kids hung out on deck, at the bow, napping, driving, and later swimming. (They ate very well, which is often a challenge all by itself.) The boat is quite comfortable, and very well maintained, with an enormous bimini and brand new mainsail.
The calmer waters allowed real cooking to go on belowdecks, and soon we were dining while the sun set and the Miami skyline lit up. Very cool, especially when the skipper surprised my wife with a Cuban birthday serenade! After dessert and Cappuccinos with Cpt Morgan we were dropped off on the dock, fully an hour and a half after our time was up! Very gracious hosts and a memorable day.
