“Location is prime. Staff... not so consistent.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 14, 2013

I'll have to start this with a disclaimer that this is my first time staying in a South Beach hotel.

Ok, lets begin. Location Location, Location. This spot was prime time if the beach is what you're looking for. Right across the street from the beach, next to Oceans Ten bar/pub/club/hangout spot if music is what you're looking for. We spent a lot more time at the Clevelander next door though, it was a much better environment. No cover, drink specials daily. Great place at night.

ROOMS
We had booked a king, but when we inquired about rooms that were "quieter", we were left with only one option and it was a Queen. We accepted this trade-off, but found that the queen bed was more like a double. So do be wary of this if you book the queen. Room was spacious. Not much places to put luggage. Noise was not much of a concern in the ones facing away from the street and club area. Mini-fridge on hand, although jam packed with for-sale items from the hotel so don't expect to be able to keep your leftovers here. Washroom was decently appointed, water pressure decent and hot water readily available. Hair dryer and ironing board was also in-room, as were bath robes.

SERVICE

Service, was decent, but definitely one of the sore points in the whole experience. My friend said it perfectly when he said he felt like it was "like a glorified hostel experience". There were some staff that were great to talk to. And some that were downright sour, and didn't seem like they wanted to be there at all. We had conflicting information about the pool opening hours from different people, this left us not being able to enjoy the pool at all in our time there. They also took away the beach chair service if thats important to anyone. We were surprised since we've read a few people mention this great service. Its now gone, not sure if permanent.

FOOD

We had breakfast included in our room plan. Breakfast hours are 7am to 10am. They are strict with these times. We were dumbfounded when they took away almost all the food at 10am sharp. When we inquired about possibly getting a few quick picks from the food (long day ahead) they'll most certainly throw out anyways, we were met with a profound no. What boggled our mind was another group went to inquire about the food, and they were glad to open up the buffet for them. Not too sure what was going on here, we definitely didnt feel like valued guests at this point.

SIDENOTES

Bike rental was a nice touch. One of the bikes had no brakes, we pointed it out to the front desk, and not a single eyebrow was raised. Watch out for the condition of them if you take them out.

You won't need a car rental here if you plan on staying in SoBe. Completely walkable, and definitely bikeable to most places you'll want to head to.

Overall a decent stay, experience somewhat soured by some of the staff working there.

Room Tip: Rooms away from the street and oceans 10 are quieter

It was a nice hotel. A bit noisey at night, stage was right below our room. Key cards didn't work well. Staff was very nice and accommodating. They need new carpeting in hallway! Wish there was a fridge we could put stuff in. Don't like stuff you have to pay for in fridge or on table. Overall we had a pleasant stay.

Wow. I have stayed in many places all over the world but the friendliness and atmosphere of the Breakwater was fantastic. Nothing was too much trouble and nothing seemed forced or a bother. All the staff were lovely and friendly from the maid service to the manager.

We had read about the noise issues on certain rooms and when we checked in I mentioned it. The receptionist was quick to point out she had noticed we were staying for 11 nights and have therefore ensured we were at the quieter side. We had Penthouse 2 and it was a lovely room

Pool and beach are great fun. And the bar staff on the outside bar a hoot. Only downside was on November 1st (our last day) the free beach chairs had been revoked and replaced by breakfast however the manager sorted this all out for us and we had our beach chairs. We really appreciated her help. Nothing worse than leaving with a bad taste in your mouth and she ensured our last day was as good as our first. Thank you to all the staff at the Breakwater and as I work in customer sector all i can say is keep doing what you do, you do it well

look forward to a return visit to this hotel

Room Tip: Try and stay in a penthouse suite on the quieter side (PH2 was perfect)

The staff at the front desk were very helpful. From the woman who checked us in to the young man that told us where to go for breakfast. However the woman at the concierge/help desk next to the computers had the worst attitude! She needs a reality check. The rooms were very clean, modern and sleek. Small pool area. Great if you want to be in the mix of the party scene. Rating would've been 5 if it weren't for the rude woman who was so bothered by wanting to help people.

I am Oleg from Russia, I was the first time at this hotel and had the rest from October 19th to November 4th . The excellent hotel with good bed, pillows. The music was very good and it was very good voice of singer.
I lived at PH12, the room is with good balcony, where I can smoke.
Menu of restaurant was very good and the attention of services was very excellent.
I recommended this hotel and next time I will stay here too.

The location of the hotel was good. We stayed in the old wing which used to be the Edison. Once the windows were shut we did not here any noise, although we were across from the Clevelander. Our room however had an alley view. Rooms were clean, bed very comfy. Rooms not cleaned until later in day. Complimentary coffee. Insanely expensive items in room fridge. Service was quick but we did tip. Chair rental on beach was 18 dollars per person, Breakwater gives towels. Beach was ok, unless wind, then cold and did spot some jelly fish washed up on beach. Breakfast was included, eggs, toast, orange juice and coffee which was horrible. Best coffee at David's down the street, order Cuban coffee. Beware and don't eat on the strip, we did as it rained on first night and were charged 18 % gratuity...which was same for every restaurant but the food was minimal and very expensive. We walked though the strip to get to our hotel and the waiters are hostile and aggressive for business, almost desperate. Huge Latin population, Spanish spoken everywhere. Not sure how people live here as uber expensive. Seems that jobs are scarce too and minimum wage is $7.50. Shopping was a disappointment as have same stores in TO, and same frocks cost less. Last day was hot and went to visit Viscaya, which we loved, go early as less crowded, entrance is 18 per person and cab ride approx 26.00, less than 30 mins. Think traffic picks up after 3 in South beach, better than TO which is non stop. When we checked out we were charged 7 tax fee, 3 city fee and 3 for country fee, so total 13% on top of bill for each person, just saying watch out for hidden costs. Bonus was free wii fii. We were close to the pool, which we loved, 3 ft but cool infinity pool. Property was constantly cleaned and well maintained. Would go back if I won trip otherwise too expensive, almost felt I paid for air I had to breath.

Ok, so there's music, there are restaurants and there's definitely a vibrant nightlife and if you have done you homework this should be obvious. I don't quite get it that some folks complain about noise. Never noticed it but that might be the awesome G & T's they knock out at Oceans 10, one of the two bars that service the Breakwater. This hotel is rather delightful and rather a cut above many on South Beach, facilities are excellent though I did not reap the benefits of the resort fee - well other than WI FI - which many enjoy to the full, and that's my problem because 20 mins sunshine on the beach would lobsterise me to the point I would end up on the menu at Joe's Crab Shack. So I avoid the beach. Plenty of other things to do and so didn't need the beach stuff. Staff at hotel really helpful and you usually get a lovely warm welcome when returning from a hard day of doing as little as possible for as long as possible. Check out the Clevelander for a great happy hour between 5 and 7, back for a sleep and scrub up then the choice of places to eat is exceptional, with prices to suite all pockets. Now I liked The Betsy and Smith and Wollensky but then I do like my meat! Not good for veggies though I did not check out what they had on offer for them. Don't mind veggies but I can't manage a whole one. Anyway back to the Breakwater. Stayed in 305 looking inwards to the small courtyard and this was sheltered from the clubs - unless the G & T's had something to do with it. Room lovely and big with gorgeous bathroom, a safe that worked, plenty of storage and the most comfortable bed. I should really give this place a rubbish review so I can keep it all to myself! I will be back. Now who said that?

Room Tip: A room like 305 looking in to the courtyard. Not much of a view so go out for a walk!
