Well, to start, I have to preface my review with the fact that I am probably not the best candidate for a stay front and center on Ocean Drive. I chose the Breakwater through a search on another site, and was very impressed with it's Art Deco style and its beachfront rooms. Having planned to meet my teenaged daughter in Miami on her return from a student program in Peru, this seemed a perfect mother/daughter respite before we both returned home to NYC.
Indeed, our room was exactly as I had seen it on the internet: cool corner room on the 2nd floor, Deco detail both in architecture and furnishings. Really nice bathroom with a terrific shower. The staff of the hotel was very welcoming and cordial, eager to provide us with an enjoyable stay. All of this was great, HOWEVER ... our room faced the large outdoor patio of a club/restaurant - part of the neighboring hotel to the north (rooms on the south corner of the Breakwater do not have this exposure). The nightclub was in full swing until 2:00 AM, and as I tried to unsuccessfully meditate my way to sleep, I could feel each and every pulse of the performing band's reggae base line. While I thought I could handle the foot traffic of one of the busiest area's of South Beach, I hadn't taken live music into consideration. My bad...
We had breakfast on the hotel's front porch (did not do dinner) and while the coffee was definitely good, I can only say the rest was OK (don't expect any real Maple syrup with anything in Miami). The next day I took my daughter over to the Puerto Sagua, a Cuban diner a couple of blocks away on Collins Avenue, for a less costly breakfast and perhaps more of a local experience. Later on, I would have loved a similar type of dining experience at dinner at the restaurant Tap Tap Haitian on 5th Street, but this wasn't my daughter's thing (she had had enough rusticity on her journey in Peru and was craving upscale).
At any rate, I do reiterate that any negative reflection I am presenting was MY mistake. For anyone else who seeks vibrant night life in the center of everything and right by the beach, I am sure this absolutely is the perfect place for them. It is very conveniently located both to the beach, to restaurants, and shopping. Shops along the mall at Lincoln Avenue are just a leisurely 15 minute stroll away. AND for those people like me who would prefer a quieter room, these do exist at the back of the hotel. These rooms are smaller and look right onto the back of the abutting buildings but they are very peaceful. The woman on duty when we were checking out wanted to make sure that they were aware in their records that I was a guest preferring some quiet, so that if I do return, they will be aware of this preference, which I also think is indicative of a desire to provide good service.
Finally, I really want the fact that I was extremely pleased with the hotel's staff to be the highlight of this review. From the moment I indicated (on our 2nd night) that noise was an issue, the person on duty at the front desk (wish I could remember his name so I could site him specifically - it was the evening of July 17th 2013**) could not have been a better host. His commiseration made me feel immediately at ease, and he was exceedingly accommodating as opposed to offering the defensive attitude that I should have known what I was getting myself into. He quickly found us another room, sending up a bellman to help us move out. It was quite seamlessly done, and I was SO grateful. Later I was contacted in our new room, by the front desk, to make sure that our new diggs were to our liking. Even when I joked that my daughter was a little disappointed that we were no longer in the glamorous front room, he was quick to offer to look for something else! I let him know that I was just fine with our new arrangement. As well, the bellman named Rony (Roni?) who helped us change rooms, was the loveliest man. When we realized the next day that during our move, we had left my daughter's purse in our first room, he immediately came to our rescue, and was exceedingly helpful in assisting her with it's retrieval.
So, for a guest seeking a hotel in South Beach and all that part of the world offers and entails, this is a very nice place to stay!
As I mentioned earlier, any rooms on the North side of the hotel are forced to reckon with the almos...
