First off, the location is perfect. The Townhouse is located a little further up Collins from some of the bigger, better known hotels, but it is still a short walk from Lincoln and Ocean, and is consequently a little quieter. It is also less than 100m from the beach.
The hotel has a very clean, almost spartan feel, mostly painted white. This is a theme carried on into the rooms, which are fairly basic but very clean and comfortable. However, if you are looking for sumptuous luxury, this is not the place for you.
Breakfast was included in the room rate and consists of a fairly small, but in my view perfectly adequate, continental buffet. There is also a sushi restaurant in the basement, which while a little pricey, was great food. The only bar is also in the restaurant and was also expensive - 13 dollars for a gin and tonic.
Overall the hotel has a very calm, relaxed feel. The other guests are friendly, but in my experience tend to keep themselves to themselves, which suits me just fine. The guests also seemed to be a fairly mixed bunch from all over the world, and tend to be mainly in their late 20's and 30's.
For me, the best thing about the Townhouse is the staff, they are all very friendly and helpful, but manage to achieve it in a way that doesn't seem forced or over the top (sadly something all too rare in the US). Special mention has to go to the barman in the BondSt bar, who gave us a master class on saki, including a number of samples!
So would I go again? Yes, definately if I was looking for a good value hotel in a convent location.
One final recommendation - if you want great Turkish food, check out the Sultan just around the corner from the Townhouse - looks like a kebab shop, but really cheap and great food
