My wife and I stayed here pre cruise. I used my Sherton points as it was convenient to the cruise port and on the beach. Arrived around 12:00 friday morning. On my way to the hotel, i called the front desk and asked if the room was ready and was told that our room was ready. Upon arrival (and after watching the employee fumble for 5 minutes) I was told that a room was not available, this is not the way i wanted to start my week. We drove around Miami and found a restaurant to eat at and when we got back to the hotel, the room was now ready. The lobby was nicely appointed but the elevator was as described in previous reviews, slow as molasses and very old, i actually feared for my safety. My first impression upon entering the room was "oh my, what have i gotten myself into". I felt like i was in a time warp and was magically wisked away to the 1960's. The room was cleaned properly but had a strange lysol type smell that was overwhelming, as if the previous tenant had died and they were trying to mask the odor. We had a beach view which was very nice, we quickly opened the door to air it out. We settled in and went to the beach, very nice beach, we spent a few hours there and had a great time. Had dinner at the hotel bar, had a nice conversation with the server who I believe was from Costa Rica. Dinner was OK. Slept very well (as i always do on the Sweet Sleeper beds). Checkout was painless, our bags were taken by the bellhop and the car was quickly retrieved by the valet.
Pros:
*other than the check in experience, the staff on the whole were very kind and accomodating. Valet service was very quick to retrieve our car, etc.
*beach is very nice and accessible
*close to cruise port and airport
*great location if you want to experience Miami
*Room was clean and bathroom was somewhat updated (using this term loosely)
Cons:
*Room smelled terribly upon arrival
*Room was extremely dated
*Check in was pretty slow and person seemed uninterested and unknowledgeable
*20 bucks to valet seemed a little ridiculous
Overall, i would stay here pre or post cruise only if I was able to use my Sheraton points, otherwise, there are currently 107 hotels in this area that are potentially better.
