5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2010

This was our first time in South Beach and we will be returning to the Blue Moon. It was always nice to come back to our hotel to be greeted with smiles and genuine concern about our vacation. We were in town for a destination wedding and were on a budget. The value we received compared to other choices was fantastic. The breakfast and snack time was a great added feature. We stayed in a one bedroom suite. It had comfortable furnishings, a living room, bathroom, two flat screen tv's, two ceiling fans, central air conditioning/heat and a king size bedroom. All of this right in the middle of everything. One block to the beach. Our suite was laid out with the living room to the street and the bedroom in the back. This allowed us to see all the happenings outside while being able to sleep quietly and comfortably toward the back of the hotel. It was quite chilly when we first arrived to Miami (upper 50's low 60's.) Not all hotel rooms in South Beach have heat but ours worked great. We also had luxurious linens to snuggle into. The front desk, concierge, bartender, cleaning staff etc.... were all friendly, accommodating and seemed to go the extra mile. All of the wedding guests stayed in other local hotels....some large chains and some like sized boutiques. It was funny though how everyone wanted to meet up at The Blue Moon. People were definitely jealous of the amenities, the quality of our room and the price that we paid. The decor of the hotel was also refreshing. Our room was light and bright with a beach side cottage feel. This historic hotel even has a working antique elevator. You really should give The Blue Moon a try.

We stayed here for one night on a stopover on the way to Belize. We didn't really go with any expectations as it was booked for us by the agent but were really pleasantly surprised. The welcome was great and they booked us a taxi for the next morning. The room was really comfy with quite fun art deco decor. The coffee in the room was lovely - proper fresh coffee and a percolator. There was no view from the window but this didn't bother us at all. It was lovely and quiet which was the main thing! The hotel is in a great location on Collins, near all the shops, near the beach but thankfully not near any noisy bars or clubs. For breakfast (included) there were bagels and waffles with a help yourself set up.

Hotel is very very well located (2 minutes away from ocean drive). Rooms are great (clean beautiful).
Pool is nice.

On the negative side : Parking is not offered (despite what is said on thier website). You have to go to a public parking area : ~25$ / night

Breakfast was included (and mandatory), but nobody told us so, so we wasted 15$ / night on breakfasts we never took at the hotel

I dont usually write reviews but I had to for the Blue Moon. First off, I just dont understand how this is rated a 4 star hotel. If this was rated 2 stars I wouldnt have stayed here to begin with and wouldnt be writing this review. The place is old and run down, probably hasnt been renovated since the 60's. It smells like your at a resort in the Dominican Republic. The room was small, the tv was from the 80's and there isnt even a movie ordering service! The valet guy must park your car in fort lauderdale becasue it took 45 mins to get it. The internet is free which I thought was good, but then realized that It's slower than a dial-up modem... Luckily I found a random unsecured connection that was fast. The good part of this hotel is the location and price... its right on Collins in the action, and its fairly cheap compared to other hotels. I travel a lot and have never stayed at a "4 star" hotel like this in North America. If you are looking to party then its all good because of the location, and then who really cares about the room. I would never take my gf or wife here, Id be waaay too embarassed! I would pay a bit more and go to a better hotel.

A large number of hotels on Miami Beach, including ours, were built in the 1930’s; “The Art Deco Age”. Details to architecture played a significant role and room sizes were sacrificed as a result. Subsequently we inherited a unique building that appeals to the artistically inclined but may be a deterrent for those interested in a room that is spacious. Aware of this; we have made improvements to our room’s design to create a spacious effect.

The hotel is a historical monument and as such we continuously undertake soft renovations to not only preserve its value but to enhance the product that is used in the delivery of our excellent guest service.

The hotel realizes the need to create a modern field while keeping abreast with the competition. We have begun to retrofit all our rooms with flat screen television units and replacing the older tube ones (to be completed late 2010). The guest is correct when he stated that we do not have a pay per view system but failed to explain that hotels with such a system limit the local channel selections for its diverse guest populace. A decision was made to replace this with a local cable company allowing guest to have more local channels along with selected premium channels which our guests today enjoy. This decision came out by suggestions made by previous guests who stayed with us.

The internet offered to the guest is complimentary however I have noticed that each laptop has it own WiFi configuration and most times this is the issue when there is a conflict interfacing. There is at least one manager on property that is able to assist if this arises.

We are aware of the structural challenges that we face daily but do not allow it to be an obstacle for un-compromised guest service. The Blue Moon has many hidden gems to offer and the only way to experience them is to become a guest of ours. Why don’t you?

We stayed here for three nights during the recent cold spell, and also considered leaving when we found out the hotel had no heat, however, we stuck it out for the first night, and after that the temperature in our room improved. Given the unusual length of the cold spell, we didn't really blame the hotel for not having heat. On the plus side, the location was great-one block off Ocean, so much quieter where we were. There were some earplugs left in the room for guests, but neither of us felt the need to use them. The breakfast was better than we expected, with a pretty good variety of items. Maybe it was a slow time, but there seemed to be enough room for people to get their food and sit down to eat. Most of the staff was accommodating, if not overly friendly. We didn't like the fact that the bathroom was really tiny and the water mysteriously went off one day for a while. Also, the $10 a day amenity charge for things we didn't use (beach towels, gym pass, etc.) was irksome. This should be made clear at time of booking, with an option to decline. Valet parking was somewhat expensive, but handy-no hassles with parking, and everywhere we wanted to go was within walking distance. To sum up: good price for the location, decent breakfast, adequate room. On the minus side, very small bathroom, amenity charge, and of course no heat. This seemed more like a modestly priced European-style hotel, and there were a number of foreign guests staying there. Perhaps not the place for Americans used to more luxury.

Granted, it was the coldest weather Miami has seen in years, and it never dawned on us to ask if the hotel had heat. It didn't. The temperature inside our room was 55, and the temperature in the bathroom was even lower. We were offered extra thin cotton blankets used in hospitals. We froze. There was no offer of a refund, there was no indication prior to going they didn't have heat in the rooms, and given the weather, we felt they should have said something.

That said, the room was extremely small, no place to put your clothes, only mood lighting, so you couldn't read in the room (assuming the weather allowed you to stay in the room) and the bathroom had only tiny shelves, insufficient to hold toiletries. All in all I would rank this under good conditions as a two star hotel, and under the conditions we were there, they should have been closed by the health department.

South Florida in this past January, experienced a very unique weather phenomenon that brought with it record low temperatures. Some parts of our state experienced snow flurries. As a state that typically enjoys average temperatures of 75 degrees or higher annually this caught us off guard. No one was adequately prepared for this extended cold burst.

Many older, boutique hotels including ours in and around South Beach were not built with this consideration in mind. After all we only had but a few days on average with low temperatures and the blankets we had were sufficient; then. During this cold burst we were cognizant of the pending challenges and tried to locate space heaters within the area but were able to procure a few which was not sufficient for the number of guests that were checking in. Subsequently we were allowing guests to check out early without penalty and if a guest came in and was dissatisfied with the cold accommodation we offered 100% refund on the room upon their departure.

Those guests that stayed were conscious of these conditions and we provided adequate blankets and relocated them the following day to rooms that had heat (only a few of the rooms were equipped). If this guest had insisted to leave he would have been given the opportunity to do so without incurring penalties.

I do apologize to this guest for the inconvenience due to “mother nature”, however had he insisted on immediate dialogue with management we would have exceeded his expectation.

As I have alluded in previous postings, we cannot alter or modify the size of the rooms because we inherited a building built in the 30’s with obvious special limitations. We have made every effort in creating neat amenities throughout them to encourage an optical sense of space.

We consider our guest complaints, monumental, as they speak volumes about our service and the product associated with it. Again I do apologize to this guest for this unfortunate stay and hope that “he” will return when the temperature is warmer so that we can pamper in true Southern Hospitality.

I had two nights at this hotel in a so called deluxe room. The room was spacious, and the bathroom was clean, however everything else was definetly not worth the stars that they claim, I think two stars would be more appropriate. The carpets and the couch were extremely filthy and stained. The breakfast was a parody: plastic wrapped old muffins, coffee, tee and juice, fruit and two waffle maschines filled with charcoaled dough. The staff was friendly and helpfull but the rooms and stay here was not nearly as good as I have expected from the pictures on the homepage..

Consistency, Quality, Detailed Oriented are a few choice words that can be said of the hotel’s staff and its product offering. Guest’s individual reviews are used as a benchmark and allow us to evaluate the levels of service that is offered to the guests and gives foresight in anticipating the evolving needs of today’s sophisticated traveler.

Having dissected this review its seems that it was either posted in error or posted several months too late. I must admit that our hotel continues to be a popular destination and this is reflected in the higher occupancy levels. Though welcoming; this indicates that the product will be heavily utilized and experience accelerated wear and tear. We began an aggressive campaign to identify, renovate or replace any and all furniture that appears to be heavily worn. This campaign continues today.

In the distant past we carried a few breakfast products individually wrapped while waiting on necessary permits. We have been granted these permits and since then (over six months now) we have been carrying not only fresh products but also those of a high quality.

I trust that the reader will use objectivity in choosing our hotel where a Quality Guest Centered experience is what you will enjoy.
