“Luxury on the Beach”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2009

Very cute boutique hotel, conveniently located right on Ocean Drive steps from the beach. Staff was very welcoming and accommodating. The hotel had one of the comfiest beds I’ve ever slept in! It was also the first time I had seen a TV in the mirror of the bathroom. You should definitely check out the hotel’s restaurant, which has amazing steak and the chef sends out awesome appetizers. All in all, a great stay for a couple or someone looking for a bit of luxury on the beach.

My husband and I just returned from an extended 4th of July get away weekend at the Betsy. From the minute we arrived both of us were extremely happy with our choice. The location (as mentioned in other reviews) is perfect. Close enough to the "action", but a nice retreat to come back to. The staff is very professional and accommodating. We did get a very good rate through Orbitz ($249/night). The room was very clean and the decor was light and airy. Not your typical hotel room. The size was smaller than we would have liked but for three days it was fine. Our room was on the 2nd floor next to the stair case. There were some times that we were awaken by people going up/down the staircase. Not too much of a problem but if I were paying more than $249/night it may have been an issue. We enjoyed the after dinner drinks in the hotel lobby area. Beach was great. The kids working the beach shack (handing out towels/chairs/umbrellas) were terrific. All and all this was a great long weekend and I would definitely return and highly recommend The Betsy Hotel.

My partner and I visited Miami Beach for pure relaxation over the extended 4th of July holiday. The goal was to do absolutely nothing, enjoy the beach and some good food. After reading all of the good reviews and finding a good deal online, we decided to give The Betsy a try. In the end, all of our goals were met and expectations exceeded. After the stay, here's some thoughts:

A Unique Design:
The Betsy is a beautifully designed and renovated 1942 beachfront hotel. As opposed to the area’s collection of streamlined Art Deco hotels, the approach here is transitional, meaning modern, colonial, and “beachy.” If you prefer subdued refined elegance then you’ve found your spot (as opposed to Miami’s much lauded party scene - which does little for us).

A First Class Staff:
The staff is polished, poised and professional. Everyone was impeccably dressed, and beautiful, yet, lacked the dreaded attitude found at other properties. At all times they were accommodating, humble, and in-tune with guest needs with bend-over-backwards hospitality.

A Perfect Location:
While located on Ocean Drive, the hotel is at the north end of the street, secluded and quiet from the major party scene. This also puts you directly at the 14th Street access to the beach... just 200-ft from the hotel’s front door to the white sand. NOTE: If you are looking for a party, stick to the Clevelander or other properties - The Betsy's quiet refinement will not be your spot and you will not be happy.

A Supply of Amenities:
While the hotel charges a daily resort fee, it is put to good use. The hotel provides free chilled bottled water  and newspapers at request. Additionally, at the beach guests are provided color-coordinated cushioned lounge chairs, towels and umbrellas -- a real first-class luxury.

A Porch for Enjoying:
Whether enjoying the sunrise over morning coffee, or an evening cocktail illuminated by the turn-of-the-century light bulbs, the hotel’s street-side front porch will keep beaconing. The elevated stoop is the perfect place to watch the promenade of people and contemplate as the world goes by.

A Few Areas for Improvement:
1. The proximity of our 1st floor room to the combined lobby-bar-restaurant (while convenient) experienced moderate noise issues. Specifically, the occasional gaggle of patrons or waif of music would travel down the hall and into the private chamber. Due to the newness of the hotel, the staff was unaware of the issue. Once alerted, they were more than eager to rectify. We hope that this will not be an issue for future guests.

2. For a hotel of this caliber I would have expected a proper continental breakfast included for the rate charged, plus the daily resort fee. While the morning selections were exceptional, it was pricey. Given the fact that Starbucks is located directly across the street I would have expected more competitive pricing. TIP: Skip the hotel’s breakfast and walk to La Provence French Bakery. This is the VERY same bakery that supplies The Betsy. Instead of $4 coffee, you’ll find it for $2. Instead of a $5 apricot danish, you’ll find it for $3.

A Job Well Done:
In conclusion, visiting The Betsy was amongst the best of any of our extended weekend vacations. The intimacy and scale of the hotel made for an expected personable VIP experience. The immaculate condition of the property and the unique surroundings are immediately transcendental. After just a few days we cleared our heads and completely relaxed. While the building and setting are exceptional, it is the staff that made the experience so utterly unique and special. The only question once home: how soon will we return?

Have the feel of a upscale european luxury hotel. The master suite was upscale with a high tech television hidden inside the bathroom mirror. Fine restaurant (reasonable serving Kobe beef, excellent carefully prepared desserts. fine wine collection with an extraordinary wine cellar. excellent service, Sip mimosa on the porch or veranda. The lobby was upscale but cozy with a touch of carribean and some 40's. it was like waiting for Clark Gable to enter the room. Celebrity watching is great in this luxury hotel, I left a silver bracelet watch in my suite which was sent to me by Fedex

The Betsy is a nice looking hotel, with clean and nicely furnished room but, after that, it's not all it is advertised to be. We paid the same price as some of the larger service oriented hotels were charging, and according to The Betsy website they were service oriented as well. This was not the case. I will not get into all the details however, our introduction to the hotel starting with the bell hop was less than acceptable. Our room which faced another buildings wall was next to disappoint us. We were so discontent we asked to speak with the manager and were set on leaving for another hotel. She was great, and because of her we stayed. We were once again disappointed when we headed for the beach. The website states, "Before hotel guests depart for a day at the beach, we’ll happily set up a customized picnic basket with guests’ choice of snacks, wine, drinks, magazines, or other luxury beach essentials", this was not what we found at all. And, there is no food or even coffee to be found before 8:00 a.m. (expect in your mini-bar). And the room service food is from BLT steak, so real breakfast or lunch, unless you want a ribeye. Bottom line if you are used to service of The Ritz or even a Hilton, this is not the place. If you want a nice, clean, cozy place to sleep you will be happy here. But, I think you can find that somewhere else for much cheaper.

We really liked this hotel. Our room was quite big, clean and very quiet anfd fitted with flat TV screens everywhere (even in the bathroom).Nice Gym but dispointing small swimming pool. The bar is cosy with nice modern colonial atmosphere.
The restaurant BLT is way overpriced and disapointing, you'd rather go to a real steakhouse ( 2 main courses + 1 cheap bottle of wine = 250 USD).
Disapointed by the fact that they didn't provide free bottled water in the room (cost 2usd for a small bottle in minibar) and tap water too warm to drink

I visited South Beach with a few close college girlfriends and we found our hotel The Betsy to be a sort of haven set back from the hustle and bustle of Ocean Drive. We are in our twenties and enjoy going out and partying, but we also love our quiet and downtime just as much... this made The Betsy a perfect hotel for our needs! The staff was incredibly gracious, helpful and friendly and the atmosphere of the hotel in general was refreshing in that it was not like the other austentatious and busy hotels on Ocean Drive. The rooms--as well as the lobby--were clean, white and serene. Perfect for relaxing after a day at the beach and just before going out to a nice dinner or club at night.

Also, I strongly recommend having dinner one night at BLT Steak. The food was very good and the popovers are to die for (my friends and I made sure to order a few for our flight back home!).

Definitely do yourself a favor and book at this hotel the next time you stay in South Beach!
