“Nice but overpriced”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2013

We stayed for three nights in October.

It was spotlessly clean and beautifully furnished.

Excellent front desk and concierge service etc.

My real gripe is charges. $16 per day resort fee (resort, what resort? its a hotel on the beach). I think nearly $40 per day to park the car and I made one fairly short phone call to try and book our next room and they charged me $18 for that as well.

So overall a good experience and maybe being from the UK we are used to paying a final price for an item and maybe in the US resort fee's and the like are accepted but I think it is out of order. I have no idea how I generated nearly $200 in fee's (with tips on top) but did not actually buy anything.

We only ate at the Restuarant and had the best steaks ever. Service food and wine was superb. Better steaks than Mortons or Ruth Chris and the most amazing bread starters. It is right on the beachfront at the top end of South beac.
Expensive, but worth every cent

Firstly I loved this 70 year old hotel. The overall style, the grandness of foyer, the southernness of the furnishings, the way they treat guests - all superb. I couldn't give it the extra point because as a 70 year old building it's made from wood and you hear everything. People chatting as they walk down the corridors (insensitive to what time it might be and others sleeping), the people in the rooms above walking around (and using the toilet), doors opening and slamming somewhere on the floor, even the wall safes being unlocked and closed with digital codes. I also didn't like the feather pillows. I did however really like the photos of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones that adorned the walls - that was very cool.

My husband and I came here for a few days relaxation after a busy 5 days in New York. Immediately on entering the hotel we felt relaxed. The welcome was first rate, with our bags immediately being taken care of and a warm welcome by staff. We arrived at 1pm and check in wasn’t until 4pm so they took our number and called when the room was ready for us. This was within an hour whilst we were having lunch outside at the hotel. When we then went to get our room key we were offered a glass of prosecco or mimosa each which was a nice touch. The hotel had a lovely feel to it, a really nice atmosphere. Their slogan is 'expect no more, this is happiness' and I'd say that was pretty spot on!

We were very pleased with our room – pool facing on the second floor so quiet with a nice view. Some of the furniture in the bedroom was looking a little tired. According to the literature, the hotel was refurbished in 2009. A little TLC is definitely needed to maintain the rooms at the high standard travellers would expect.

The Rooftop deck has an impressive view of the ocean. It’s small but we always managed to get a sunbed just where we wanted to be. The towels on the sunbeds were not changed daily which was surprising. I made a mark on one, one day and it was there the next two days. We asked for fresh towels and these were given but I would expect this to be done daily as standard.
There are some inconsistencies in service here – sometimes we got ‘table’ (or sunbed) service and other times we had to go up to the bar ourselves (in either event we were charged a gratuity by default) and the selection of both food and drink on offer is limited compared to what’s available I the main bar downstairs.

The Rooftop Wellness Garden was closed as the roof was being repaired, which we were not told about. This did not affect our stay as we had not planned on having treatments. It did however affect the Yoga classed which normally take place in this area and the Yoga teacher was surprised to see this area closed and so we had to improvise by moving the sunbeds around before the class.

So onto the Yoga – Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. I went to two classes with my husband during our stay. Seeing the sunrise on Miami beach and then doing an hour Yoga overlooking the ocean is pretty special. The first class was taken by a lady who was fantastic. She was obviously really invested in the practice and it made me go a second time. The Thursday class was taken by a gentleman and the class was not quite so impressive mainly because I caught him using his phone a couple of times whilst he was supposed to be telling us what to do next and also because the routine didn’t flow as well as on the previous class.

The fitness room is small with just a couple of treadmills, some weights and other equipment. Every time we visited, there was no one else using the space however.

The pool and poolside is small but again very nice. It’s in the shade for the majority of the day being in a courtyard area of the hotel so we spent most of our time on the roofdeck which has misters to cool you down. Also, the beach is just across the road where towels, sunbeds and umbrellas are available for hotel guests free of charge.

The lobby area and bar area really nice to just sit and relax in, with a vast range of drinks available.

We had lunch at the hotel twice as it was convenient and good food with a decent selection to choose from – although I had the same chopped vegetables salad both times as it was so good! We ate in the hotel restaurant - BLT Steak – one evening and that was superb. I'm intending to write a separate review about that.

We had continental breakfast included in our room rate (as a Mr and Mrs Smith extra). We had expected this to be croissants, fruit, toast, cereal and juice. However we got to choose from two of the following: croissant/pain au chocolat, Danish, scone, coffee cake, muffin, lemon pound cake, Madeline and seasonal fruit and berries. This did not suit us so well (we’re not big on eating cake for breakfast) so stuck to fruit and croissant and odering extras off the main breakfast menu which had a wide ranging selection. We did ask for toast a couple of days and five grain toast was provided with no extra charge which was good.

On having a drink at the bar one evening the barman informed us that October is the quietest month of the year, with prices to stay at the hotel significantly cheaper. We had not realised this but I think the hotel being quiet improved the quality of our stay because we got great service, could use the pool and rooftop areas without any competition from other guests (these areas were quite small given there are 61 rooms) and managed to get a table outside for dinner one evening at short notice.

The fact that I am only able to nitpick at a very few minor negative things goes to show how wonderful the whole experience was for us. We were definitely made to feel special and looked after. Having walked passed a number of other hotels in the area, The Besty certainly looked the best for what we wanted –boutique, personal service, quality, stylish.

My tips – make sure you check for things such as live music, Yoga, other events going on at the hotel. We weren’t told about any when we checked in and didn’t know to ask. So we missed the live music at the hotel on Wednesday and Thursday (apparently playing every Wednesday and Thursday) and almost the Yoga too. We’ve nothing to compare too but having a pool-facing room was lovely so I’d recommend this type of room. Visit in October when it’s quieter and cheaper!

Room Tip: Ask for a pool view room as it will be quieter and one on the top floor so you don't hear people...

We loved the stay; the location is perfect, the room size was good (we were in the king room w/ ocean view) and very clean. The breakfeast is expensive and don't worth but there are a lot of near options (Porch is very good!).
The manager was very lovely and helped us with an setback about a mastercard promotion, and did the best to solve the situation.
The best part was the beach service.

Room Tip: Pick the ocean view room!

10/15/13 I stayed at the Betsy for one night for a business Trip. The Boutique Hotel is absolute perfection! Rooms are clean, modern, and spacious. This hotel combines old South Beach Charm (decor is great!) with top notch modern class.

We ate at BLT steak for both dinner and a business lunch the following day. Dinner was far superior - one of the best Tuna tar-tar's ever and NY Strip was perfect.

This hotel is right on Ocean in the heart of SB - I completely recommend staying here.
