“Great Hotel if you don't want to deal with the party life of Collins and Washington Ave (heart of S.Beah)”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2013

My first stay at the Mandarin was a nice one. It is one of the premier hotels in South Beach and has an amazing view of the Bay, not beach. So if you like hanging on the beach and walking 2 minutes to your room, do yourself a favor and move on.

The hotel is located in a very nice community in South Beach, but the only places to go within a 5 minute walk is Whole foods and a CVS. All the action is on the other side of South Beach about a 25 minute walk from the hotel. Cabs are a necessity when staying here. So if you want the convenience of walking to the beach, Lincoln Road restaurants and shops, Ocean Drive, stay at other comparable hotels that Morgans Hotel Group has to offer: Delano or Shore Club.

Service was excellent at the spa! Can't say that about the dining area outside of the pool. The poolside service was great, ask for Ashley!

Ask for a bay view room, a little extra, but well worth it!

I'll be back when I want to be a little out of the madness of South Beach.

Thank you for your recent visit to Mondrian and for taking the time to share your experience with us. We are glad you enjoyed your stay with us, thanks in part to our setting on Biscayne Bay and the amazing views we offer. We invite everyone to check with our amazing Concierge team for fun local spots within walking distance of our hotel; of course, we are only a quick cab ride to Ocean Drive.

Best regards,

Ellis

This was my first experience with the Mondrian South Beach and as the HQ / Rest Stop for our Girls weekend - it was the perfect setting. The pool is the big draw and the absolute best feature of the hotel - it is big, open, facing the bay and filled with great staff (servers a little questionable), lots of chairs and a fun scene. Find David when you arrive at the pool. He is the most amazing, personable pool concierge I have had the privilege of dealing with. He will hook you up with chairs, towels and some fun. I only wish the servers, who seem to be MIA a lot of the time, were as good as all of the pool guys.

The rooms are nice. We had 4 rooms for the weekend and they varied in location and floors. Obviously the higher floors provide a great view over the bay. Do try to avoid the wheelchair accessible rooms as the bathroom design is terrible (no counter or sink space & the shower leaks all over the bathroom floor). All the rooms were big and spacious with a little kitchenette area and a sitting area. Make sure when you book, if you are there with someone else, to ensure you don't get one of the rooms with a double bed (still don't understand why any hotel would have a double in a huge room - there is lots of room for a king).

There is no "scene" at the Mondrian so you have to taxi over to the action. It is about a 5-10 minute cab ride. The distance was a nice retreat from the insanity that can be Ocean Blvd! But when you are coming or going from the hotel - stop by at the lobby bar and get Ivan to mix you up a stellar cocktail. He and his espresso martinis are another hidden gem! All in all, we all loved our stay and the service at the Mondrian and will be coming back!

Room Tip: Get a Bayside room so you have a view. Avoid the X08 rooms if you can - they are handicap accessib...

Awesome Hotel and Staff.. We stayed here last year and loved it so much that my Fiancé and I decided to get married and invite 100 of our Friends and Family....Though it rained on our special day the Hotel did everything to make it wonderful since it had to be moved in doors. The Hotel is awesome and the pool and view are "WELL NO WORDS A MUST SEE"

I love love love this hotel. Granted, over a few stays have noticed that the rooms are a little more tired and could probably do with a little extra TLC. The prices have risen, some of the nice touches (like complimentary coffee in the lobby in the morning) seem to have disappeared and the valet parking is indeed extortionate. BUT what you get are fantastic friendly staff, (who recognise you from a trip a year ago!!), take really good care of you and make you feel at home. The 2 room suites are HUGE and perfect for when you just want to relax 'at home' with a movie or a basketball game, with whole foods supermarket just a few streets away and a fantastic well equipped kitchen to store your groceries, a large sofa bed in the living room and even a dining table and chairs. There is loads of storage space too (just as well, the outlets around Miami are some of the best!!). The concierge are amazing and absolutely nothing is too much trouble for them, with great local knowledge and recommendations. The bar and restaurant are great and on those warm december days when the crowds build, the South beach vibe around the pool and bar is overflowing. On quieter days you can just take in the beautiful views across the water. A car is handy as Miami is sprawling but you could walk to Lincoln or the busier parts of South beach if you want- or very short cab ride. I actually like that this hotel is a little out of the busier tourist areas- but i suppose it depends what your stay is for. Besides there are quite a few restaurants within a couple of minutes walk. For me, this is the ideal place if you are there for more than a few days (especially if you have been to Miami before and dont necessarily want to do all the tourist things or be out for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day) but just want to chill and relax and go at your own tempo. The hugely spacious suites are a big bonus if you plan on spending at least some time in your room/hotel relaxing!

Mondrian was HQ for our girls weekend. Pool is definitely the best feature of hotel! Beautiful pool area, lots of chairs and umbrellas. David looked after securing us chairs, towels, umbrellas both days and treated us like royalty. Wait staff is another story. Most of the time the servers are MIA, can never find one when you want to order a drink. Our server on day 1 actually even forgot to place our food and drink order along with the group sitting next to us and then she disappeared for over an hour so we couldn't even ask about it! It would have been nice to reflect the poor service in the tip but since they automatically include 18% on the bill you can't. I only hope they share tips with the guys schlepping the chairs and umbrellas around as they work their butts off. Rooms were fairly spacious but there are no drawers to put your clothes in so you have to live out of your suitcase or have stuff scattered all over the room. Closet in our room was tiny but OK for the few items we needed to hang. Decor with the girl/doll image on the wall is kinda creepy, but bed was super comfortable. Strangely no full length mirror in the place (unless you count the one in our shower) and the lighting in bathroom is useless for putting on makeup. Also our shower leaked like crazy. Floor was completely flooded after 2 people showered. We had a pretty good deal on hotel and we were glad to be staying in a quieter location than right on the main strip in SoBe. SoBe wasn't too far to walk during the day but would be an uncomfortable walk in heels for the ladies at night!! Cab rides were pretty cheap though. All in we enjoyed the stay and would likely stay here again.

Room Tip: If you're a light sleeper ask for a room away from elevators but be prepared to pay more. Pool...

I stayed at the Mondrian in March 2013, what a stunning hotel! The decor is fantastic and the pool deck amazing. We had a light meal which was really great. Downsides - the wifi is shocking.

We also went on springbreak weekend which turned not only the Mondrian but the whole of miami into a cesspool of drinking, loud techno music and way too much skin. Also - the cab drivers in Miami have the worst attitude we have ever experienced.

First impression of all white bar and restaurant would be appreciated by some but not all. Better at night when coloured lighting improves ambience.
Negatives
Waited at check-in to be seen then waited over an hour for our room despite arriving at 4pm. Room not ready!
Room smelt of damp and furniture all starting to look grubby. Stains on lampshade. ripped net curtain and ripped towel. Not expected of 4+ stars. Moved rooms due to smell. Second room did not have the smell or grubbiness of first room but on demand tv not working and neither was phone to reception to tell them it was broken. Heating cooling unbelievably noisy. Same problems as some of the other reviewers about poorly fitting main door to corridor meaning all conversations from corridor at 3am heard in room!
Our friends also staying in Mondrian had problems with their entertainment system and problems with their toilet on constant flush (again a problem in previous reviews)
Bathrooms are far too small for class of hotel and sink is style over function with no where for placing items and no way to plug the sink for wet shave.
Positives
Staff very friendly and approachable. Location good and restaurant food top notch.

Overall. Shame the rooms let down the hotel. We've travelled the world in 5 star hotels and if you want a funky hotel lobby, trendy ultra white bar and packed pool with partying crowd and are not bothered about the room your sleeping in then this may fit the bill. If you expect more- stay elsewhere.
