“Friendly haven on Ocean Drive with good wheelchair access”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2013

The staff at the Pelican were fantastic, so friendly & helpful. The food was good and breakfast on the upper deck was always a treat. Happy hour, happy days with free drinks for hotel guests!

The wheelchair accessible room (#204 Optique Diabolique) is very good and the huge fan is brilliant (word of warning, keep your fingers away!) The route from the ramp to the lobby is often cluttered with restaurant chairs and heaters but be patient because the staff will clear the way very promptly.

Twin beds are on the narrow side but comfy. Piece of advice if you need to leave your table unattended to go to the restroom do not leave drinks, keys or maps behind because they may be cleared away by over zealous shift manager!

Room Tip: The wheelchair accessible room (#204 Optique Diabolique)

Loved the decor. Great service and location is awesome for beach. Happy hour was worth the stay. Food good but small quantities. Noisy air conditioner. Advertised as suites but regular rooms. Ok if you are in room alone not big enough to share. Nowhere to put luggage. I agree not a four star. With some small changes they could get there.

We are delighted to learn that you loved our decor & appreciate your feed back. We will be upgrading the remaining rooms with new AC systems. This will take a few months to complete. The pelican hotel is comprised of standard rooms and suites and feature two beautiful penthouse suites with a magnificent terrace. I'm not really sure where you saw us posted as an all suite hotel. If you would be so kind as to send me the information, I will ensure that its corrected immediately. My email address is lupe@pelicanhotel.com

Thank you for the opportunity to serve you,

The Pelican team!

The rooms are themed and that's kind of fun, and the service at the front desk was great, even helping to arrange a cheap ride to the airport. The guy who brought our room service one of the nights was pretty disorganized, but otherwise everything went as planned. I think south beach is lame, but this hotel was pretty cool.

My wife, 17 year old daughter and I spent a long weekend in South Beach. We stayed at the Pelican Hotel. The experience could not have been better (assuming you understand that you are in the heart of South Beach, where it is non-stop action). The room was classic art deco and very clean with a great view of Ocean Drive and the ocean. In my decades of traveling I don't think I have encountered a staff more accomodating, attentive and nice.

It's hard to know what you get for 4 stars these days. Obviously it's not a business hotel with a pool, gym, etc but maybe you expect more than just a room. And it's marketed as a design hotel but the furniture is very tatty. The room we had was very dark and glum and I didn't want to hang out in there at all but there not really anywhere else. There's a restaurant connected to the hotel but the staff there are all working on a percentage of your bill so don't expect to be able to sit at a table with just a coffee for half an hour. That said, the location is great for the beach, but so's the road one block back. The free drinks at happy hour were a nice touch and I really like the compted beach loungers and towels. The staff were all very good.

Thank you for taking the time to review the Pelican Hotel & for highlighting our complimentary happy hour , beach services and fresh towels daily.

Due to the layout of our hotel, most of our rooms do not have ocean or city views. But please know that we offer six beautiful suites with amazing views of the ocean and lummus park. We hope should your travels bring you back to South Beach, you give us a second chance to serve you. Our cafe is an extension of the hotel our staff does not work on a percentage. Know that we invite our hotel guests to enjoy the Pelican Terrace & restaurant at no charge and we encourage it during our complimentary happy hour and now complimentary breakfast. I'm truly sorry for your experience and it will be shared with the staff to ensure that it does not happen again. Thank you for bringing it to our attention.

Best regards,
Lupe Castillo

We booked this hotel through hotwire when we planned a last minute trip to Miami over the Easter holiday. We requested a 4 star hotel on hotwire. The Pelican was fine and had many plusses, but if you are accostomed to traveling 4 stars or above, this hotel is not for you.

Pros: The hotel staff was extremely nice and accommodating. The shower heads are amazing. (We've talked about seeing if we can buy one.) The hotel offers complimentary beach chairs and towels. The location is in the middle of the SoBe action. The hotel offers a free happy hour from 4-6 p.m. for hotel guests and the drinks are good and strong. Did I mention how amazing the location is?

Cons: My biggest complaint was the bed. It was billed as a memory foam matress, but it was hard as a rock. The room we had was very small. While I love my boyfriend, we both get a little on eachothers nerves when we don't have space to spread out.

Dear Stefanie, We appreciate you taking the time to review your experience at the Pelican Hotel & we are truly sorry you were not happy with our mattress choice. Our sleep on green mattresses are hand made and consists of three layers . Beginning with a thick layer of Natural Latex, to keep the spine properly supported throughout the night, helping to improve back pains along with relieving extreme amounts of pressure. Some of our guests love them and some request an extra padding to serve as a pillow top. Stefanie, we selected this product because it's hypoallergenic, resistant to bacteria, mold, mildew, breathable, holistic, biodegradable and sustainable.

As a boutique art deco hotel with 29 rooms, we are limited with the size of our rooms but make it up to our guests with the many upscale amenities that we offer. Know that we also offer 6 beautiful spacious suites for those seeking larger accommodations. Should your travels bring you back to Sobe, please send me an email as I would like to extend a loyalty rate in suite accommodations.

Thank you for your kind review,
Lupe Castillo
