“Bring your own fan!!!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2010

This small hotel had a great location, outstanding staff, but the a/c in the room was awful.... The room had a very tiny central a/c vent that did not produce much in the way of cooling air. It did in fact carry cigarette odors from other rooms. I love Willie at the Pool side bar... great personality and service. Short walk to the beach but if you want chairs and an umbrella be prepared to shell out $25 We called about the a/c and they did check out the compressor but it didn't solve the problem and being on the 3rd floor the windows did not open.

Dear JSANDER,

On behalf of the entire staff at the Marseilles Hotel, I would like to apologize for the inconveniences you encountered. No one should ever have to spend a warm night due to A/C issues. This is not the way we like for our guests to remember us, and I would personally like to let you know that if you come back to us, I will personally ensure that you get a taste of the room product we are trying to uphold. Perhaps the hotel was too full, otherwise, we could have and would have upgraded you to a better room at once. It is unnerving when a mechanical issue beyond our control affects our guests'perception of us. Please reach me as soon as possible. I want to make it clear that to us having a satisfied guest is our only goal.

Sincerely,
Juan-Manuel Valera III

First of all let me start off by saying i am not at all picky or impossible to please. My partner, my friends and myself just stayed at this hotel in Oct 2010 and will NEVER stay here again. When booking the hotel online the pics looked beautiful. I will say the hotel is in a great location but so are the other 20 hotels around it. The rooms look NOTHING like the pictures on the website, when we checked in half the tile on the ground in the bathroom were cracked and there were screws holding the toilet paper in the dispenser, there is also no fan or vent in the bathroom so you always need the door open which gives you NO privacy. There was no air conditioning in my friends room but WE had a tiny little air conditioner in the window which didn't do much when they complained that the room was unbearable they were told only rooms on the other side of the hotel that get more sun get an air conditioner....umm HELLO this is Miami its very hot down here. The room quality was so poor it made public housing look like the Ritz. The doors in the hotel all slam shut so you hear people around you going in and out of there rooms all hours of the night and there are big vents at the bottom of the door so you can see peoples feet when they are standing outside your door, you feel like someone can pop the vent off and crawl into your room. My friends room keys only worked about half the time and were always having maintenance people up to fix it which never worked then the staff had the nerve to blame them for it not working. The rooms also had an odor and all the windows are nailed shut. it takes 20 minutes to regulate the water temp in the shower, our handle to our room door was half off on the outside. We were not looking for five star services but this was terrible we found it odd when nobody comes to take your luggage to your room for you. We wanted to leave and go to another hotel but one of the people on our trip was low on money and didn't want to front any more money for a nicer hotel otherwise we would of all checked right out! The beds are smaller than queen size so two people sleeping in one bed is very tight, the list can go on and on. I was just on the website and looking at the pics again and have NO IDEA where those pictures came from. Spend a little bit more and stay at a nicer hotel its worth it in the end.

PS- the staff are idiots and none of them acknowledge you

Dear GREEKGOD522,

As a hotel that services many people, we understand that sometimes we may not be what everyone expects. Our staff will always try to go the extra mile in order to ensure that you feel as comfortable as possible. We are always trying innovative ways to wow our guests, but we also understand that sometimes you may not be pleased with what we have done. However, I would like to personally invite you to come back and try us. Amongst the 200 hotels in Miami Beach that receives thousands of people a month, we are one to learn from our guests' comments. I assure you that to us nothing will be more meaningful than meeting your expectations, and this time for good. Please contact me at jvalera@gomiamibeach.com and I will personally handle every aspect of your reservation.

Sincerely,

The hotel was ok -- our room was fine & had a view of the ocean -- but for the price we paid we expected a little more. The pool closes early -- we swam after hours and no one cared. Pool & room were clean. We stayed here 'cause we wanted to see South Beach, and we saw South Beach. Would have given it a better review if it was more reasonably priced. A decent location for wandering to the beach, shops & restaurants and checking out the Art Deco district.

Not to bad, not to great either. The hotel is located near the beach zo thats a big plus. The pool was ok. To bad they have at the entrance of the hotel a restaurant, this takes away the hotel feeling. During our stay a alarm went off, that was unpleasent. We had a nice hotel with a balcony (only a couple of rooms have these). The hotel is is need of renovation, our door to the balcony leaked water during rain, the bathroom was somewhat old.
Dont forget if you arrive with youre car they charge 25 dollar a day for parking. And they charge you for everything (inroom safe box, etc)

I have been reserving in this hotel because of its location and its price. It has a direct exit to the beachwalk/beach, a nice size swimming pool, and a great backyard to lounge in (although now they have a bar cabana and music is a little on the loud side) - The room was "ok", not the ones shown in the pictures of the website but nice and airy, with white tiled floor and a mini-bar. Yes, bathrooms were old style but it makes it part of the charm of the hotel. The view was great on the 8th floor where we stayed. Full view of the sea and the beach! People in the front bar/coffee were always helpful and agreeable, same with people at the reception. And best of all is reserving through them- I have always been asking for ALVARO who has been more than patient with me and find us accommodations every time with great savings! He really is there to help the customer, looking for options for them so they can have a great stay at a great price (so if you call them ask for him!)
All the staff is mostly bilingual so I have seen this hotel be a favourite of many South american travellers (and Alvaro speaks Spanish too!) - Much appreciated to all.

Dear MIAMIMARGA,

I am so happy to hear that our staff made a difference in your stay. I also appreciate that you can differentiate between Art Deco charm and a modern fixture; some things, you cannot remake, and Art Deco is one of them. We get so many people year after year that come for the Art Deco and for the legendary and impressive charm these hotels once had in the late 30's and 40's when many of them boasted amenities and luxuries never seen anywhere else. It makes me extremely proud to know that we can service such a place with the success that makes you come back again and again.
By the way, I personally let Alvaro know about your comments, and it brightened his day. Thank you so much for your sincerity.

First off, there was no available parking. We had to park a few blocks down and carry all of our luggage ourselves. Then when we got to the room, there was no air conditioning and when we put the shower on the water was brown. The bed was uncomfortable and the room didn't even look clean. We only stayed one night because our stay was so awful. Then we get back home and have multiple fraudulent charges from the Marseilles and their sister location the Dorchester. The managers and employess gave us the run-around and we were forced to dispute the charges with our bank, cancel my debit card, and wait for a new card to arrive which took over 7 days! The employees and managers are ver unprofessional and I do not recommend these hotels to anyone!

We were due to stay at another hotel on Ocean Drive, The Wave, but on reading the awful reviews for that on Tripadvisor, we contacted our travel agent, Thomsons and wanted to change the booking. We didn't have a massive budget and so we decided on the Marseilles (there wasn't a great deal of choice in the Thomson Worldwide brochure) Having been to Miami twice before (stayed at the Park Central) I do like staying at the older Art Deco hotels simply because they have character. It is also nice if they have been refurbished to have the mod cons also. On arrival as we were a honeymoon couple, we were upgraded to an ocean front room on the 7th floor which was lovely. Very roomy bedroom area and original Art Deco bathroom, great, comfortable bed..... a safe, a fridge and a TV... not a modern one but in good working order. Fantastic views of the beach and beyond!
The staff were always very pleasant to us and our room was cleaned to a good standard at all times. We were happy with the service. The hotel concierge was also helpful in sorting out our Go Miami passes as there was a problem with them.On leaving, the reception staff happily called a taxi for us to take us to the port of Miami for the next leg of our honeymoon.
The hotel is in a great location, not far from Ocean Drive, not far from Lincoln Road and on Collins. We got the airport shuttle from the airport for $2.35 each and there is a stop close to the hotel... that was definitely a bargain!
We have no complaints about the hotel and would stay there again. It is a good 3 star hotel and well priced.

Dear KIKKI21,

Thank you for your sincere comments. It was a pleasure showing you our concept of a great stay. Maybe one day you will be able to come back with your kids and show them your honeymoon hotel as many guests have done after 15, 20 years. There are 2 things that remain clear on their minds: the imposing structure of the Marseilles, and the great staff!

See you soon,
