“A great spot to see Miami from”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 10, 2014 via mobile

We are in Miami on conference and was looking for a good place to stay. Tripadvisor recommend the Essex as a colleague ad written a good review. So trusting in the system we booked it. The Essex is a great hotel in easy reach to most of the places you need to get to in Miami Beach. Rooms are clean ours was onto the back end of the hotel so noise levels are good. Saturday night there was a lot of noise but Sunday was a lot more quite. Staff are trendily and help full. The breakfast is a simple but good start to the day. Get up early if you want fresh fruit as they do run out as we found this morning. But coffee and pastries keep coming. Happy hour each evening is worth dropping into for a free glass of wine or beer and a good look around Art Deco reception room. Wi if is a bit slow in the rooms but is strong around reception with loads of places to sit. Also grab some of the home made lemonade it's very refreshing.

There are many things to like about Essex House. First, it is in a fabulous location -- close to the action but far away from the noise. I knew my husband (light sleeper that he is) would hate anything on Ocean Drive where music and partying can go on all night long. Also, we very specifically wanted to stay in a historic Art Deco building which Essex House certainly is. Our suite was fine and very consistently serviced, however it was nothing exceptional -- very similar to a nice room at any Marriott. The lobby of Essex House is a lovely example of Art Deco design, though the area is a bit dark and gloomy. Be aware if you stay here that there are no "services" to speak of except for a mediocre "Happy Hour" and a middlin' continental breakfast, though breakfast is not something we care that much about. Also, I thought it was quite odd that there were no card in your room delineating information about the hotel and its "services" though, I suppose that makes a certain amount of sense since there really aren't any services to speak of -- no room service, no laundry service, etc., etc. Finally, the internet connection at this hotel had the worst signal and the slowest response time of any hotel wi-fi I have ever encountered. I ended up having to use the mobile hot spot on my phone to even get online 90% of the time. It was extremely frustrating and completely unacceptable for a hotel which was charging us nearly $400/night (not including tax.) Whether we were checking e-mail, trying to contact clients or merely trying to make a restaurant reservation, the wi-fi was interminably slow and/or non existent.

Bottom line: A lovely example of Art Deco architecture in a great location with ok rooms, no services and the worst WI-FI connection ever.

I got the Superior Queen room, 222. It was a corner room and looked out on the corner of Collins and 10th. I loved the windows. The room was smallish but fine. I only shared one wall with another room. Good thing since I could hear them clearly if i didn't have the TV on or some other noise in my room. The bathroom was small, the sink tiny and low but very clean. The bed linens were among the best I have ever slept on!
Short walk to the beach, shorter walk to Ocean Ave.
Front desk people were very nice. I had a nice conversation with the bellman who got me a cab. Interesting lobby. I thought the breakfast was fine. Not sure what other reviewers were complaining about. I would come back here when I want to be in the middle of things.

The Essex House along with the Clevelander capture South Beach like no other place can. We enjoyed our comfortable room, great food, and loved the happy hour. A short walk outside our hotel room and we were part of the excitement that truly captures the South Beach experience. Being in the hospitality industry, we know when we are experiencing great service and that is what both the Essex House and the Clevelander deliver. Our stay was as care-free as it gets. We can't wait to go back!

This hotel and it's sister property the Clevelander are the quintessential Miami hotels. Perfectly located at Collins Avenue and the beach, these two properties have mastered excellent service, attention to detail, upscale accommodations in a fun environment. Happy hour in the lobby and complimentary continental breakfast are an added value. You can choose to engage in the "party" atmosphere outside with the music, pool and DJ or chill in the sports bar. The C-level roof top experience is tranquility by day and party by night overlooking the beach and action below. They have stayed true to their art deco roots with modern accommodations. There's something for everyone here. Can't wait to return.

Room Tip: Stay at the Essex house to be close but not on top of the action. Stay at the Clevelander to be rig...

Service was great! Liked the weekday happy hour at 4:30 pm, though, I wished they did this on Sat and Sun as well. Juan at the front desk was extremely helpful.

Collins is a complete disaster with all of the construction, but none of that seemed to cause any immediate issues for the hotel - no additional noise, wait times, etc.

I would HIGHLY recommend upgrading to a King Suite. We had no issues with noise from the Clevelander, Collins, other guests (until the last night - but hey, it's SoBe right!). Suite was bigger than any other that you will find for this cost in this location.

The pool at the Essex is tiny, but it is oddly quaint and relaxing. Don't bother with the Clevelander - the Clevelander staff is completely incompetent even for Miami Beach standards. Rude, lazy, etc.

Good central location, but not quite up to the standards of the hotels north of 17th. Good stretch of the Beach within 1 minute walk.

If you can get it for the right price, then forgo more expensive options; you won't be disappointed.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a King Suite!

The hotel is perfectly situated one block in from Ocean Drive which is the loud section at night. It is within walking distance to the beach, lots of restaurants and Lincoln road. Charming hotel for a good price
