This was my second trip to the down town Miami Intercontinental, and I found the refurbished Hotel was most beautiful and impressive. Being an Ambassador, I had previously been upgraded into a Suite for my stay which had been a Bay view room, this time however it was a room with no view, other than into the adjacent apartment building, so make sure when you book to request a Bay View room.
The whole atmosphere of the Hotel has improved beyond my previous visit. The rooms have been lavishly and comfortably redecorated. The public areas are also very modern, and the use of live video displays showing the surrounding area live at reception and at the lift lobby is amazing.
All the food outlets I visited had excellent choice and quality of food, with the exception of the Club Room’s evening snacks (23 Dec 2012), which were a disgrace to the IHG group’s name. I have visited over 20 different IHG hotels throughout the world and that nights offering was the pits. The only worse one I can think of is in Perth Australia a few years ago.
Regardless of the above and further points below I would certainly use the hotel again in the event that my travels bring me to Miami. Location is brilliant with the nearest station for the down town people mover being right across the road, and if you have little baggage, it connects with the rail to the airport.
I must mention a really interesting facet, in the lobby at the Concierge’s desk, they have a flat table top computer (60” screen?) showing all the location of interesting places to go to and they can be displayed with a touch of the screen. Nice touch!
Hotel’s normally have a very friendly interface with their customers, but in this case it took a couple of complaints to get a front officer manager to see me in my room to go over some of my problems. First there is a fancy wall unit behind the T.V. which has a fluorescent back light. The first night there I was unable to locate how to turn it off! The switch is a small barely visible rocker switch on the side of the bezel frame, it needs something to show it’s there like a small label say “Light Switch”!
The new Television in the room is the BEST I have ever seen, with over 60 channels available. Mostly in High Definition, which is the clearest, sharpest picture I have seen anywhere in the world. However, there is no printed copy of the channel listing however you can see a list of the channels on screen, but who other than a resident of America would know what NGHD or SYFHD might stand for. There is a desperate need for such a hard copy of the names of the channels. The new system has been in operation FOUR months and still no listing available for the customer in the room.
As an Ambassador, there is usually a welcome gift and fruit bowl in the room upon arrival, there was none. It never arrived. Another minor issue, all suites and club rooms at other InterContinental’s have weighing scales in the bathroom. When I mentioned this to the manager, he said I only have to request one. Sorry, one should not have to request what is the normal facility available in the bathroom, next thing you will need to request shampoo and soap!
My room had been booked well in advance, and upon arrival on the Saturday night I would have expected to find a daily paper in the room, but none were available. I did get a local paper on the Monday morning.
From the above, whilst I loved the hotel it is the smaller things which customers would expect to have in their room appear to have slipped through the gap! One final point, normally when booked into a club room you can be checked in and out of the club room office, in this hotel that is not available, also one is normally taken to the room and shown how things work, for instance it was not until my second day the I “discovered” the wardrobe hiding behind the door into the second toilet. I had wondered why there was only three feet of wardrobe rail in the closet just inside and behind the main bathroom door!
Finally, Mr Intercontinental, please, get the little things sorted and you will continue to have a winner.
