“Outstanding music, cocktails, and chocolate soufflé”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2012

We went to the Upstairs at the Van Dyke Cafe the night Sammy Figueroa's band performed. What an outstanding evening! The music couldn't have been better! The band truly deserves its Grammy nominations! Since we already had dinner somewhere else, we opted just for cocktails and desert. The cocktails were excellent and the desert, a large chocolate soufflé for two, was absolutely delicious!
Now, the place is not ideal as a venue for music since it was not built for this purpose. The band is crammed in a corner, partly obscured by a large column. Still, the sound is unimpeded since the place is relatively small. The room itself is not oozing elegance either, but the music, the cocktails, and the soufflé more than make up for the shortcomings. Try it. It's worth it!

“Great food & decor”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 9, 2011 via mobile

I had lunch here with some friends. The middle eastern platter and spinach/goat cheese salad was delicious. Very nicely decorated and music at night.

“A pretentious music night club. Avoid it if you can.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2008

A pretentious music cafe. A rude and unprofessional management and staff coupled with overpriced, terrible tasteless food. That is what the "Upsatirs" at the Van Dyke has become.

When you go to a music club what do you expect? For starters a stage right? Well there is no stage at the "Upstairs" Van Dyke anymore. A stage demonstrates a visually entertaining and powerful presentation of music, it is what seperates the audience from the artist. The new ownership has eliminated the most important factor in a performance.. the stage, what a brilliant idea. Secondly, all the performances I have seen in legitimate music clubs are preceded by an announcement to keep quiet during the performance. Not at the "Upstairs" oh no... the management actually encourages conversing while the performance is going on, how disrespectful and degrading to the artist how typical South Beach stuck up "all about me" low minded attitude. No appreciation for the Arts. The staff is rude (another wonderful South Beach attribute) unresponsive and cold like Gefilte Fish. It was a pleasure not to leave a tip. There are some very good local musicians who play there but the establishment presentation and the demeanor of the staff ruins it completely. It does not feel like a music room at all, it feels a like an ordinary cheezy lounge at the Mariott. No folks the "Upstairs" at the Van Dyke is not what it used to be. Avoid it if you can, because it is a NYC wannabe original music night club and it fails miserably.
