Miami should be proud of what the Perez brings to South Florida. This is a first-rate museum in every sense of the word. Architecturally, the museum is stunning and it incorporates all the great views of the intracoastal and the city of Miami skyline. Unusual for an art museum is the amount of light brought into the spaces. To protect the art, certain rooms have special curtains that filter out harmful frequencies but allow light to enter the room.
The collection is eclectic with emphasis on the Caribbean area but you can also find Jasper Johns and Rauschenberg. The museum staff have done an excellent job with their selections and presentations. If you are senior citizen, the $40 yearly membership is a real bargain which also allows you a 10% discount at the museum store and the very good Verde restaurant. Parking is underneath the museum, easily accessible, and costs $4 per hour. The only real problem at the moment is the construction of the Museum of Science next door which is before you get to the Perez.
Be sure to note the "hanging gardens", the magnificent views of the cruise ships in the ship channel, the Miami skyline and Ai Weiwei's Chinese calendar sculptures outside the Perez. Staff and volunteers are very friendly and helpful. This is a great place to take out-of-town friends.
