The Deering property is a gem. It is almost always a peaceful and restful experience. The property is so infrequently visited you might think it a secret. Even those living here have not a clue where it is and what it is.
Two old style historic homes sit on this waterfront property. Absolutley nothing glitzy, this is the most serene place in all of Miami. On a good day (weekday) you might be the only visitor on the property. That’s special. Barnacle House in Coconut Grove has some similarities, but doesn’t shine a candle to the Deering property.
You learn some history about the original owner, Charles Deeering. Charles’s brother built Vizcaya, the very opulent over the top mansion nearer downtown—far more popular and a very busy place located next to downtown Miami. The Deering property is located in Palmetto Bay, south of the City of Miami, Coral Gables and Pinecrest.
Be prepared to sit on the front porch of the two houses to take in the amazing beauty of the place. It is waterfront heaven. There are no concessions here. You don’t come here looking for a gift shop. There are restrictions as to the kinds of activities you can enjoy while visiting. For example, no you don’t bring a Frisbee or a ball. There is an enormous front lawn on which you can picnic and where young ones can run and play. I would recommend your planning a picnic: bring a small cooler with lunch, and a blanket. They also have picnic tables under the gigantic Royal Palms. Children might enjoy wandering through the two houses but be forewarned, the children may be bored. With only the top floor of each house closed off, you can walk through the houses and get a feel for what life would be like if the place were your’s. Take Old Cutler Road to SW 168th Street (Palmetto Bay)—worth the drive.
