Over recent years Wynwood has begun a bit of a renaissance which may well eventually compare to South Beach's turnaround beginning in the 80's. An influx of art and design gives the neighborhood a lively, funky vibe (and expensive—Art Basel holds some of its events in and around Wynwood). On the more day-by-day level, lots of creative little shops and indie restaurants have begun popping up on the streets surrounding the conventional Midtown Miami (Target, Marshall's, and dozens of other shops much the same as any other boring mall). Some may consider the outer edges grittier, less refined—I prefer them. For my tastes, too many of the more central restaurants are a bit overpriced—that's how development works. Meh. Still, given that just a few years ago it was almost all rundown, abandoned buildings, and that now it's a quite vibrant hub of shopping, art, food, and high-price-high-rise residential, overall it's a much, much better community.
