“Nice Hotel but....”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2008

I stayed at the hotel recently for 3 nights. The Hotel location was a disappointment. Although you have a nice view over Biscayne Bay, I would have preferred to be on South Beach which was a $25 cab ride each way. The hotel is not really up to the usual Mandarin Oriental standard. Having stayed at Mandarin Oriental properties in Asia, this one looks dated. The rooms are nothing special. Very little asian influence and very bland. The bathrooms are a good size and well equipped, but again, nothing special. I guess I have high expectations of Mandarin Oriental and have never been disappointed (up until now). On the plus side, the concierge, and Giselle are worth a mention. She was fantastic in assisting with restaurant reservations and an excellent choice of bars/clubs etc. The pool at the Hotel is also a good size, but again, looks dated. The private beach is really not much bigger then a sand-pit and not at all what I expected! Would I stay here again, well....you know what, probably not. I bet there are other properties in Miami for a similar price but of a much higher standard and in a much better location. I guess to sum up, the hotel was average and more worthy of a Sheraton, but not a typical Mandarin Oriental.

In September 2007, I stayed here for three nights on business and it was a fantastic time. I booked through the Mandarin website hotel directly and received a great deal - probably because it was toward the end of summer (low season) - but still nice time. The room had a unique layout and was wonderful since it was not your typical box hotel room you see more and more of these days in chain hotels. King bed very soothing, sofa and seating area cozy and comfortable.

Bathroom was maginficient - great soaking tub and see through shower so you can see outside - great shower head. Toiletries top notch as expected.

The small things really made it, for example, the mini box of chocolate waiting for you, the full ice bucket set up for you every night and the orchard.

The only problems I had were hotel key demagnetized and the television was old and picture quality very fuzzy.

Had some time off from business and spent it in the pool - so calm.

I recently had a fantastic stay at the Mandarin in MIA. The service was excellent from start to finish. The door/valet staff was friendly, engaging, and above all knowledgeable!

The room was spotless, all of the mundane details that some places miss were addressed with overwhelming consistency.

They truly exceeded my every expectation which is not an easy thing to do. Great job!

Overall a fantastic property with incredible levels of service. The only downside is no beach - but, took the shuttle/option of using Casa Casuarina (former Versace mansion) on South Beach one day and it was such a nice change of pace. Pricey but worth it - you don't mind paying premium prices when you get what you pay for. Just be aware the hotel is NOT on the beach and in fact has very little beach/swimming compared to actually being on South Beach. On the other hand, it is more relaxing and not as hectic as the overall South Beach experience. Rooms are perfect - no problems - great bed and great bathroom. I have stayed in two room types and any room at this property from a furnishings/functionality perspective is very nice. No request went ignored and overall staff training/experience level is second to none.

  • Liked — Everything - high levels of service and perfection to guest requests.
  • Disliked — Somewhat of an off the beaten path location and remote - but worth it.

My wife, 2 year old daughter and I spent a wonderfully relaxing Mother's Day weekend at this Mandarin Oriental. It is the 2nd one we have been too, and it was just as enjoyable as the one in San Francisco. The service was excellent (including taking care of the crib upon our arrival at 3am after it turned out they didn't have it in the room). 2 1/2 days felt like a week and my wife enjoyed her half day spa treatment. The room was clean, comfortable and had a wonderful view with balcony over the bay. We did not have a chance to eat at the hotel restaurants for dinner, but did have one very wonderful breakfast in the Cafe Sambal. The hotel is about a 15 minute drive to South Beach and 15 minutes to Coral Gables. We highly recommend this hotel, we are Fans.

This is the third time my husband and I have stayed here and we have enjoyed each of our stays.

Check-in
∑ Fast, no wait, polite service
∑ Booking was easy, did over the phone, however I requested a crib and high chair for our 6-month-old baby and we did receive an email confirmation confirming my request however when we checked in there was no record of this. It took a very long time for the crib and high chair to be brought to our room
∑ We valet our car, however they did not retrieve our entire luggage and we had to call down to request that everything was brought up- they apologized about the error and we had our remaining bags within 15 mins

Rooms

∑ All of the rooms offer nice views of either the bay or the ocean
∑ The amenities are very nice
∑ Rooms are spacious and nicely appointed in calming tones
∑ I think all of the rooms offer soaking tubs
∑ The hotel provide slippers which is a personal pet peeve I have with hotels that charge high high prices but can not even bother to provide slippers. I mean how much can they really cost and who wants to walk around barefoot after getting out of a shower on hotel carpet
∑ Beds are comfortable and linens are nice
∑ The baby crib we requested was very nice to look at, however the mattress in it was horrible, very soft and not comfortable at all
∑ House keeping was good, not great but well enough. A few things that should have been removed remained in our room the entire time (example empty paper cup of coffee)

Food/Pool
∑ Did not get room service so no comment
∑ The two restaurants offer a good variety of food options, enough so that you do not need to leave the Mandarin to go elsewhere (provided you are only staying one weekend)
∑ Service is very, very good. The staff at Sambal remember us by name the second day, which was very nice, servers who did not wait on us even asked us where the baby was.
∑ The pool is unusually small for the size of the hotel however I have never found it to be crowded
∑ Pool offers wonderful view of the water and it is truly a very peaceful place to relax
∑ Poolside service is fast however the food is not the best
∑ Poolside service is just ok, hard to flag a waiter, hard to get more towels, etc

∑ Spa/Gym
∑ Great gym as far as hotels go. Lots of new equipment to work with
∑ Spa is beautiful and treatments are worth the price
∑ Spa exercise classes are a mixed bag. I have taken yoga twice and the first time the instructor was great the second time she was just awful to the point I thought she may injure some new students in the class

Over all we love this hotel, however this last time left a few things to be desired. We will return in the future.

We booked into the Mandarin Oriental Miami for Easter weekend before leaving on a Royal Caribbean Cruise from the Port of Miami (a five or ten minute drive from the hotel).
We took our five year old son.
Every single aspect of our visit was perfect. The staff was kind and professional. They treated us very well. We participated in their easter celebration which was lovely.
The room was large and clean.
Oddly, it was the best part of our trip. The Royal Caribbean cruise sucked.
