“Modern Zen Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2008

Have been there about half a dozen times before, always enjoy the peaceful zen spirit. This weekend was no different, but some observations. The hotel service was top notch, although the restaurants were somewhat slow; waited 25 minutes for a sandwich and sushi roll. The pool area is very small (although hip and easy access to cocktails and snacks), but the fake beach was very relaxing and quiet. This is not a hotel for small kids; better for business people and hip couples. The views of the bay are amazing, and the food and drinks at all the restaurants are high end and healthy. Small aside: Lobby chairs were stained, needed replacement. Overall, the meditative quality is worth the price tag, and the hipness of the clientele adds to the overall "star quality" feel.

Sorry but I don't get the hype here. For $655 a night, one gets a 4 star hotel room -- an old, medium-sized TV, worn curtains, carpets and armoire, a stained white sofa, and a lousy shower head. The bed, though, is very comfy. Plugging in my computer required unplugging the one desk lamp as there were only 2 sockets available (the internet charge is $15 per day).

There is no coffee/tea maker in the room and so, if you order the SMALL coffee from room service, you will pay $13 (once you add in the $3.50 delivery charge, 20% service charge, and sales tax).

Be warned that the room doors are constructed so that they will slam shut if left on their own to do so (NOT suggested for those who like to sleep in).

As for the location, you are near nothing that is within walking distance and so be prepared for 20-30 minute cab rides if you haven't rented a car.

I will say that the staff are all very friendly and helpful.

This hotel is a welcome oasis very near all the hubbub of South Beach.
PROS - Beautiful Lobby, Attentive Staff, Fabulous Gym and Spa(one of the best massages I've had in a long time). The beachfront area was pleasant and not overly crowded. Food at all the restaurants was excellent. The room was large and very comfortable.
CONS - For such a high end hotel ...NO FLAT SCREEN TVs....only the old Sony's. Also NO WIRELESS in the rooms...need to attach to the internet (it was high speed though). Coffee in lobby in morning is extra...I hate being nickeled and dimed...just charge $25 more a day and give the free coffee. Lastly, No Salon for hair services on premises. Which was annoying after having spa services.
The Mandarin in NYC is much higher end....time to put a little TLC into the hotel....

  • Liked — the beauy of the hotel and surrounding
  • Disliked — no flat screen tv, no hair salon, charge for morning coffee.

My husband booked a room through Amx for the first night of our honeymoon before we departed to the Caribbean. He then called the Mandarin to upgrade to a suite. Upon check-in, we were upgraded to the next level suite, the Biscayne, and given first-class treatment all the way.

The room was more than spacious- 1600 sq ft, immaculately designed with wonderful views. The master bathroom was incredible, the robes and slippers luxurious and the bed & linen so comfortable, we could have slept through an earthquake. A handwritten note from the GM along with chocolate strawberries the size of plums and a bottle of champagne were also delivered. The pool and man-made beach for sunbathing are lovely.

We were hoping to dine at Azul, but it was closed the Sunday evening of our stay, so the staff made a reservation for us at Cafe Sambal. We were treated to a lovely dessert and dinner was excellent.

Upon our return to the suite from dinner, we were so pleasantly surprised to see our bed and bath were covered in rose petals- and my husband was not the one that arranged it.

Wake up call was pleasant & punctual. We enjoyed our breakfast on the patio with the sunrise. Top quality ingredients.

What a way to start our marriage... Everything about the M.O. was a five-star experience.

  • Liked — Service, class, and luxury. Peaceful and relaxing. Convenience to airport, upgraded room, personal touches throughout the entire stay.
  • Disliked — Azul was closed

The Mandarin Oriental Miami is a tranquil oasis. If you are not into the hustle, bustle, noise and crowds of South Beach, this is a perfect spot. The lobby and restaurants are stunning, and the rooms have a spectacular view of the city and the water. We found the service to be impeccable, and particularly liked the pampering we got poolside- a terry cloth cover for our beach chairs, big fluffy towels, and ice water without having to ask. With our mojitos in hand, we enjoyed the view of the infinity pool and the boats beyond.

The bed was absolutely to die for – so comfortable we were asleep in about 15 seconds. We also enjoyed the big soaking tub and separate shower in the bathroom. As for nightlife, the hotel bars were attracting a very fashionable crowd on the weekend. If you want to venture beyond the hotel, it is an easy 10-minute walk to get to the 9th Street and South Miami Avenue restaurant area. We had a lovely candlelit meal there at Dolores.

The Mandarin is serene and elegant. We would definitely stay there again.

  • Liked — Beautiful lobby and rooms.
  • Disliked — Not located on a beach.

If you find yourself in downtown Miami (business trip), this is the hotel to stay at. Better yet, if you can bring along your significant other, you can be sure that they will have a really nice time too.

We stayed in a Junior Suite, which was on the corner, overlooking the magnificent Bay and Downtown skyline. Coming from New York City, I was very impressed. Our room had a balcony and we often sat there, reading or enjoying a drink.

The hotel rooms were very comfortable, the staff very attentive, friendly, and fulfilled every single one of our requests. Their slippers are very comfy!

What I love about the hotel is aroma that is in the air. It's as if you walk into a spa the minute you step inside. It's a relaxing smell. The spa at the hotel is quite special too, I tried the "Ritual Experience", it was nice.

On the other hand, this hotel is not in the middle of a vibrant neighborhood...that is why it's really only good for business travelers. Companies also host offsite meetings and conferences their too. The ride to South Beach is 15 to 20 minutes.
