“Great Miami Vacation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2014

Recently first time we stayed at Marriott's Villas at Doral. Overall it was very pleasant experience. The staff was awesome. The location of this resort is very good. By car it took us 20 min. to reach all attractions including lively South Beach. We felt very safe and had a great time and will stay there again.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2013

I recently stayed here during a business trip (the government rate was outstanding) and was highly impressed. I confess that I am a Hilton Grand Vacations Club member and love the HGVC resorts, but this was on par with the amenities at the Hilton resorts. Very nice! I got a two bedroom suite that was huge, with excellent amenities and an outstanding bathtub! I did not have enough time to partake in any of the resort activities, but the list of options was great and I'm sure that vacationing families would enjoy their stay. I did not experience any of the noise issues that others mentioned and our housekeeping services were very good.

My only issue was with one of the guys who checked me in. I commented to him that the resort was quite nice and did he, perhaps, have any information on the Marriott Vacation Club. He just kind of looked at me funny and said No, he didn't have any info on that but maybe I could just look it up online. Ummm...really? Don't you WORK for Marriott? I wish I'd gotten his name, as he struck me as a bit of a knucklehead and not representative of Marriott in general (all the other folks I spoke with while there were quite helpful). Thus, "Chucklehead at the Front Desk" is not included in my ranking of this resort...

3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2013

We had a group of 7 stay here for two nights before a cruise, so we took 2 villas among us. The spaciousness of the villas was perfect for our group, and we enjoyed the wonderful pool. We were surprised to find laundry detergent for us to use, as we didn't want to get on the ship with dirty clothes, and the 24-hour little quick mart in the lobby was great.

However, the housekeeping situation was dismal. The morning after we checked in, the housekeeper came to the door. We weren't ready to leave the room yet (it was still pretty early) so we asked her to come back later. She said "No", threw some towels at us, and left. We were flabbergasted! I went to the front desk and told the girl there what happened. She assured us that our villa would be cleaned. When we returned to the resort much later in the evening, our room had still not been touched. This is unacceptable.

A few other things: Only one TV remote for the 3 TVs that are in different rooms; Major construction going on at the resort VERY early in the morning...don't plan on sleeping in; Even though we booked the rooms far in advance on the same reservation, we were in different buildings, half the resort away, and were told they couldn't move us together because the resort was booked. The resort was most definitely not booked, the place was practically empty the 2 days we were there.

Room Tip: Ask to be placed far away from construction

The units are spacious with lots of amenities (full kitchen, washer/dryer, 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, balcony). I think we had an updated unit (granite counter tops although the appliances were white not stainless as in some units) but the furnishings already seem a little worse for wear.

The pluses:
*friendly desk staff (we had an early flight into Miami and they allowed an earlier check in)
*Spacious units
*free parking (so many places in the Miami charge for parking)
*washer/dryer in kitchen area
*excellent HVAC - too often air conditioning units are noisy or ineffective with cooling. The HVAC in the units is more like residential vs. the wall units in the standard hotel room.
*huge shower in the master bath
*very responsive to my concerns (when the guest manager called to check on our stay, she asked if we had any issues) about the cleanliness of the unit.
*although small for a "resort", the outdoor areas are beautiful and seem well-maintained. The pool area is very nice with lots of comfortable seating under cabanas. There are stainless steel gas grills in 2-3 locations for guest use.
*lots of restaurants close by

The negatives:
*wi-fi was non-existent in our unit. We tried accessing the wi-fi on our iphones, ipad, laptop and Macbook. Nothing would connect. We had a hot spot with us but that's a pain to use and expensive. This is probably the #1 factor on our decision to stay at this facility again. Having reliable internet service (which is advertised) is critical.
*housekeeping not great. They may do an ok job of the quick cleans but overall the unit really needed a deep clean.
--the carpet was dirty and stained. I was shocked when jumping into the shower to see how filthy the water was near my feet. I hadn't walked anywhere without shoes on except for inside the unit. I've never had that happen, ever, in a hotel. Yuk.
--lots of ants in the kitchen. I realize it's southern Florida but I've never seen this many ants appear in a kitchen.
--the main bathroom had powder, etc. on the tops/edges of drawers and cabinets. While the counter may have been wiped down after each guest, anything below the counter hadn't been touched.
--soap scum on the shower walls/door. I think the housekeepers focus on eye level and never bother to clean the ENTIRE glass wall.
--As mentioned above, the furniture has seen better days - lots of nicks, scratches, etc.
*Definitely in the flight path to the Miami airport so lots of noise. It didn't really bother us inside but could be quite noisy on the balcony or at the pool.
--unattended kids/large groups. There is no maximum number of people in a unit. On our last night, a very large group checked into a unit in the adjacent building. The large group appeared to be mostly young kids with a couple of adults and teenagers. Since the pool closes at 11 p.m., these kids (no apparent supervision) were out running around the game areas until fairly late. In the morning, they took over the pool area. 12+ kids with little/no supervision doesn't make for a great experience for others trying to enjoy the pool area.

With regards to the housekeeping issue, when the guest manager called to check on our stay and I brought up these concerns, she was very concerned and offered to have a deeper cleaning done. However, given our plans and schedule (work conference calls, etc.) on our last day, we really couldn't plan around a several-hour process so we declined.

This was our second stay as owners of Marriot Vacation Club and we were disappointed. The resort is quite close to the airport and right underneath the landing path of airplanes...so you do hear the screaming engines every once in a while. Concurrently, at the time of our stay there was a construction site right next door so the noise from the back loaders and other equipment carried inside the room - specially the reverse alarms of the trucks.... starting at 7:00 am! The resort is not as large as many Marriot resorts we have known... and thus there is not many things to do - except the pool of course. They had several activities planned for kids throughout the day, but were constantly late for them. I overheard another guest express their frustration about the quality of the hotel as "this is not the level of Marriot I am accustomed to..."... I could not agree more. I would definitely never return to this particular site... and am having second thoughts about my ownership of Marriot.

we stayed in a 2 bedroom villa for 3 nights. it fit 6 of us very comfortably. you can fit 8. we stayed in the main building, recently renovated nicely, very modern. (our unit 4504) master bedroom ensuite had a HUGE tub and separate shower.previous reviews noted that staying in this building is load due to the pool....but we never found any issues even though the pool was open until 11pm. there are malls and restaurants within a few miles. its about 35 minute drive to the beach in good traffic. these building are virtually under the flight path to Miami airport, so you do hear the jets...but you get used to it. we stayed here for the homestead-Miami nascar race weekend, that was about an hour to get to the track with the sprint cup traffic.

Room Tip: ask for the main building, its got the pool and is newly renovated

There is a large group of us that stay here every year when we come down for the NASCAR race in Homestead. They have been consistant every year with the rooms. They are kept up real well & are always very clean. The front deck staff are all nice as well. We did try the food from the restaurant out by the pool. I had a hamburger & was not impressed. You could tell it was a frozen patty, it reall had no taste. The staff that worked at the restaurant were all very nice as well. Other than that we really enjoy our stay every year.
