“Every room is "suite"”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

My wife and I were taking our annual cruise in January. ( We love to leave our friends in the cold and bask in the Caribbean!). We Were flying down a day early so we needed a hotel. We always bid on Priceline and always bid on resorts. We have never been disappointed. We had to be at the Port of Miami the next day so we wanted to be close. We placed our bid and we got the Mayfair Hotel and Spa in Coconut Grove. What a delight! First of all, Coconut Grove is a nice little pocket of vibrant nightlife. There is an outdoor mall across the street and lots of restaurants nearby. All the rooms are suites! They are very clean, cozy, and comfortable. The bathroom is very nice. It even had a tv! The common areas are very soothing and relaxing. The staff is nice and friendly. We enjoyed this place. The next day we took a cab to the port. It was about $25. Please "like" my review if you found it helpful. Thanks.

Room Tip: Bid on Priceline and cross your fingers.

“anniversary letdown”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

We payed for the "Mayfair Experience". This consisted of welcome champagne, happy hour drinks, dinner, japanesse soaking tub, and breakfast the next day. A $450 package. Not cheap!!

From the minute we walked in the door it was one thing after the next. Andrea, the check in girl was rude. She handed us our room keys and said nothing. I said ok what about our package? How does it work?

"We don't do the welcome champagne thing anymore".. mind you I just booked it a week prior. Then she said no dinner in your package. Never even looking at anything. Just NO. Come to find out all of the vouchers were there but she didn't look.

Then, the guy came to fill the tub. It was leaking all over the place. Took 2 calls for it to get fixed.

Dinner was aweful. I ordered sea bass which was like biting into a piece of leather.

The real kicker was that my husband was literally sucked into the intake in the soaking tub and had a rounded red and bruised mark on his side for 3 days. If this would have happend to a child or if your private body part would have gotton sucked up into this.............it could have been a medical emergency!!

I am not a complainer and travel all over the world. This was supposed to be a 4 star hotel!! We complained to the manager Nathan McGregor upon check out. His only comment was "Here's my card", next time you come back I will give you a good deal"...Unbelievable!! There will not be a next time. I really was expecting some sort of compensation monetarily, after spending $450 for one night on our wedding anniversary.

Mayfair...............this experience was the worst. The hotel is beautiful, but everything else is not!!

“Nice but quirky”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

Nice location and rooms but quirky service. Did reservation thru Expedia for 2 doubles, they put us in king. May be an Expedia issue as they say comes thru as run of house meaning whatever is available but was confirmed as 2 doubles per Expedia. They did switch us second night. Rooms cleaned late in day every day as opposed to mornings. No change available at front desk or restaurant so was difficult getting cash to leave for maids tip. Again nice property and location, no complaints there. Rooms nicely updated

“DO NOT STAY HERE”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 18, 2013

Stayed for four nights with my wife. We overlooked the aging hotel and deteriorated furniture and decorations; we lowered our head when tacked 20% gratuity for their inferior service; we didn't even mind the miniature gym........but we coyld not believe that they charged us $58 for two phone calls we never made. Their explanation is that if you pick up the receiver you have to pay a connection fee even if no one on the other end ever picked up. This on top of the $30 we were charged for the one minute phone call we did make. OUTRAGEOUS and am quite sure illegal.

Considering we dropped $450 at the spa they did not even have the decency to waive these charges. Mr. Jose Rico Arango was less than accomodating and after initially saying he could not do anything then offered to take 25% off but then proceeded to ring up the bill for the whole thing. Why a discount on something I never used, who can make sense of it, maybe the hotel can.

I am amazed that in this day and age hotels get away with these abuses. My only consolation is that someone will read this and they lose potential customers for engaging in such abusive practices....

“Great architecture, horrible service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2013

The architecture of the Mayfair is quite unique, so for architecture enthusiasts it's a must see. The rooms are also decent and mostly quiet (even in a neighborhood that can be bustling at night). However, this is far outweighed by the terrible service -- with the exception of the front desk (check in and out were both pleasant and handled professionally), all other service staff was grumpy, unfriendly and slow. We weren't even able to use the famous Japanese soaking tub because the serviceman was unwilling to fix it. Also: most of the staff can't or won't speak English (only Spanish). I would consider that a mixed blessing though; I do speak Spanish but sometimes I wished I didn't, since the conversations were rarely pleasant.

The good news is that there are plenty of meal options just outside the hotel, and there's lots of stuff to do in MIami, so you can minimize the interactions once you have been warned.
