Beware if you are booking at the Mayfair. The venue is beautiful and the wedding went without incident as far as the guests know. However, there were a few MAJOR problems that would prevent me from recommending this venue to anyone.
We were introduced to Matilde. She is nice, but I think truly overwhelmed by her job. Also, I think she is very restricted by management, so do not attribute this review to her.
First, we went to visit the venue, and saw the alcohol list. To my husband, this was a big deal. Beacause we were on a budget, we stuck with the "premium" alcohol package. My husband was okay with this because the package we saw had Dewars as the scotch. Turns out, the contract was completely different. It was a bait and switch. Yes, probably my fault, but as you know or will come to know, the flood of contracts is overwhelming. I missed it, but I guess the contract I signed had the premium package as "Canadian club." Just think, what was on the other packages? Kentucky gentleman, gasoline, rubbing alcohol? I'm happy we were treated to the "premium" package.
Second, this was a direct misrepresentation. On the date we visited the venue, Matilde assured us that our area would be clear and no other events would be booked. I remember this vividly as it was a major concern of mine because the spa was located in the area I was to have my cocktail hour. Fast forward eight months, turns out a wedding was booked ON THE SAME DAY as my wedding. This required our vendors to set up later and caused problems within the schedule. I was very disappointed. So if you don't mind sharing the venue with someone else on your wedding day, by all means you should book. I should emphasize that she scheduled the second wedding, only the week before ours. However, she did not fill me in on this at any point except when my wedding coordinator saw it on the day of my wedding.
Last, prepared to be nickeled and dimed for everything. Now, I understand I probably wasn't the most lavish or expensive wedding that they have ever booked, but I definitely was not on the low-end. I had 200 guests and a 7 hour cocktail/reception here. Matilde even emphasized how large and long this wedding was; stating she had not had a wedding lasting this long as far as she could remember. With that in mind, we asked her if the hotel could please hand out welcome baskets for our guests. Again, she informed us that this would not be possible without a three dollar fee per bag. This was not waived until hours of haggling, I understand in the grand scheme this was not a big expense, but it was a matter of principle after spending over 30k. Such a small gesture, as easy as it was for the hotel, would have been greatly appreciated. But, it was a fight and one that was not appreciated.
I would like whoever is reading this review to bear in mind that I do not consider myself an extremely high maintenance bride. I often went with the flow with a lot of things, and did not complain about this to Matilda good day. I often went with the flow with a lot of things, and did not complain about this to Matilda good day. However, I believe everyone who books at this venue should be fairly warned. I would never recommend this place to anyone, the only thing it has going for it is the beauty of the hotel.
