Lummus Park is a well maintained and clean park for beachgoers. The strip next to Ocean drive has lush green grass shaded by palm trees. Between the grass and the off-limits ridge containing seagrass is plenty of area to play volleyball, horseshoes, etc. It contains a running path that extends north beyond the park along the coastline. At 14th Street and Ocean there is a public restroom. There is an area at the southern end with workout stations, and scattered along its length are shower poles to wash off the salt water/sand from the beach. Along the path or sidewalk on each side you'll find skaters, bikers, and segway riders. On the beach are vendors from which you can rent lounge chairs for about $10 and umbrellas for about $15. They also have clamshells available for rent for sunshade. There are manned lifeguard stands the length off the beach. There were a few people hanging around that appeared homeless, but never seemed to pose a threat to anyone. Across the road are a plethora of restaurants and hotels so you can stay almost literally on the beach. Though the area was crowded and noisy on the weekend during our week's stay, it was less so during the week. Mid-way there was a mobile police observation tower present for 5 days. Even after it was gone I never felt unsafe, even though on two nights I went for late-night swims at the beach until midnight. The beach closes between the park and the water from 12a to 5a. You will need to pay for either streetside or garage parking.
