amidst the conch houses and post war (II) apartments that line the west coconut grove there's an empty lot just down the street from the DOMINO park (where there is NO GAMBLING). the lot Sunday thru Friday.......just a few cars parked, and some neighborhood types designing new plays for the HEAT. But Saturday from around 10 to around 4 the FARMERS MARKET comes alive. The lot becomes a veritable canvass of color and texture and size and shape as the mainly organic fare becomes the attraction for knowledgeable shoppers from three counties.
Even in the insufferable heat of South Florida in August the entertainment provided by the fruits and veggies is well worth the trip. You will think you landed in the middle of Florida's Redlands breadbasket, and in actuality, you have.
If it is in season they've got it and got PLENTY of it. Just ask. Packages of nuts, and curries, and berries, dried herbs and spices and all manner of island seasoning take up an entire aisle. Boxes and boxes of potatoes, fennel,cabbages, lettuce, mixed greens...
six types of mangos drew the preponderance of attention. Tomatoes, onions, beans,corn and summer fare like kale and collard/mustard greens, and bread fruits tropical summer fruits papya, carambola, star fruits....it's practically overwhelming.
Ringing the vegetable and fruit "infield" are plentiful booths offerering all manner of healthy/organic/vegan fare (no gluten cupcakes were the big hit on this day)...smoothies, empanadas, jamaican jerk everything, a few clothing booths and several environmental concerns give the entire area quite a festive atmosphere. The Actual market has prepared foods clearly marked and is highlighted by some spectacular cakes and pies with toppings from papaya to mame.
A check out line moves quickly and efficiently as each item is checked and packed

Parking along Grand Avenue or on the side streets is plentiful.
A totally relaxing, entertaining, informative, and healthy activity for once a week, once a month or just plain a quickie.....typically South Florida version of the great American Farmer Market concept.
