If you're a runner and plan to be one for many years to come, you know that you should avoid running on pavement. Miami has been called a "concrete jungle" by many a runner, and Tropical Park is really one of the few choices they have when it comes to grass/trail running. I wish the Parks Department would recognize this and make Tropical Park even more runner-friendly. For example, they could build a true perimeter jogging trail (NOT PAVED!) that even goes around the southeastern corner of the park, around the lake. With the Equestrian facility there at Tropical park, the trails could be shared by horses and runners alike. In Chicago, the extensive Forest Preserve trails are used for both of these purposes. This is a no-brainer for Tropical Park, especially considering they host high school cross-country meets AND equestrian events. A small investment in a perimter horse/jogging trail would go a long way to making this park excellent.
Trash and Dead Animals: go to Tropical Park on a Monday morning and you'll be horrified with the trash. You can't tell if it's a park or a dump. Want to see a decapitated chicken? Go to the top of Tropical Park's only hill. Next to small children playing on the hill, you'll likely find the sacrificed animals. A new one pops up every week or so, with feathers blowing in the wind across the hill. None of this stops the runners, though.
