Owner description: Built in 1916 as a winter retreat, this lavish villa is a tribute to the Italian Renaissance. The museum contains much of the original furnishings and artwork, and is surrounded by lush, formal gardens.

“A gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 18, 2014

This was the winter home of Chicago millionaire, James Deering (International Harvester, etc.). The important parts of the extensive grounds and the mansion are a fascinating museum. He spared no expense to mimic a home of Italian aristocracy. The bayside location in a tropical jungle and the work to create and maintain formal gardens are impressive. The home incorporates entire rooms purchased in Europe and moved here.

“Hearst Castle South”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2014

This mansion and vast ground right on the coast is yet another example of what incredibly wealthy people will spend their money on. James Deering, head of International Harvester built this one between 1914 and 1916 and is a common site for gorgeous weddings.

“Fascinating example of early 20th century history”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2014

This was a perfect place to spend a cool (albeit sunny) afternoon in Miami. The house and the gardens are both magnificent and for a while you really fell like you're somewhere in Europe. The estate is large enough that you can spend most of a day exploring it, and it's worth doing so - there's lots to see.

I'd also recommend taking the guided tour - you get a lot of really fascinating information that you might miss otherwise.

“Wonderful place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 16, 2014

I loved the place and the easy access to it. I took the guided tour of the house, the lady was quite knowledgeable and made us participate asking us questions and making us look around to find the answer and in this way I was able to appreciate details that, otherwise I wouldn't have noticed. The gardens were fantastic though I thought some of the plants and trees and the statues should have names and the place they come from and the different sides of the garden should have had a brief explanation of what they were. The only downside is that the terrace was closed due to a wedding so it was difficult to appreciate, but I went back to the moonlight tour and I was able to see this particularly impressive part of the house. During this tour, I was a bit disappointed as it was not well lit and it was difficult to appreciate, but the place is still magic and makes you want to go back.
