“New Year's Eve at the Epic”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2012

This hotel was clearly not staffed or ready for the busy New Year's Eve weekend. Upon checking in our room was not cleaned. After being told we would be moved to another room and a bellman would bring the new keys we waited without result. We had to drag luggage to the reception desk, stand in line, and make new arrangements for ourselves. No upgrade or breakfast comp was given. Breakfast on the 16th floor was another mess. We waited 50 minutes for our food to arrive without even having coffee refilled. Food was cold and incomplete, had to get up to "hunt" condiments. Also had to try and flag staff for coffee.
It was pretty but I will never stay here again.

Thank you for posting your review. We are saddened to hear that the breakfast service in AREA31 was not to your satisfaction. We do apologize for not exceeding your expectations while you were our guest.
We would love for you to return and appreciate a second chance.

We stayed at the EPIC HOTEL over New Year for six nights. The hotel is right in the heart of things in central Miami, accessible off I-95 and close to the park on the Miami River. That said- there is not that uch about. On arrival, check in was swift and we got a fantastic room with balcony overlooking the harbour and out to Miami Beach. A Kimpton quirk- ask for a gold fish and one will arrive in a bowl in your room! The room was clean and sizable- no complaints. Check in was swift.
The hotel has wine in the lobby about 530pm for guests but with no specific lounge, I’m not sure it works too well. There are seats but somewhat distant from the wine so you don;t get that chance to mingle with other guests in the way that other locations allow. Again, coffee is available in plastic takeaway cups in a morning till about 9.30am.
The tower houses hotel rooms and condos and after six days on the property, I sensed some needle from the condo owners. Especially on parking- more later.
We ate in Area 31- the Seafood restaurant on the first night- chatting about it at check in – and as we are Kimpton In Touch members we were given a voucher for 2 glasses of wine- nice touch. Took 15 minutes to redeem them in the restaurant until we tracked the appropriate grade of staff who would deal with it. The hostess seemed a little off hand. Indeed service was not the best I have experienced. Our server almost seemed to be putting us off every dish! Maybe it’s our British palate or older palate- we are in our 40s which seemed the older age range in the hotel- but these deconstructed seafood offerings were just too complicated!- Too many flavours and too much going on- fish should be simple. On finishing our meal, the Maitre ‘ D asked if we had enjoyed it- on saying we hadn’t but not complaining he quickly removed the cost of our wine from the bill- at $55. Well handled on his part, but one wonders how many people actually DO like it- as one server said “we don’t talk to the chef, its his baby, we darn’t say anything! “ Lets hope he reads some feedback. The restaurant in Kimpton Chicago is far superior. Area 31 also provides breakfast- we didn’t go- I don’t know how he deconstructs his eggs!. Orange juice was $6 to give you an indication! To be fair, the chef has just been voted young Miami Chef of the Year- maybe he appeals to young Floridian tastes
New Years was going to be busy. However- the valet parking on occasion was chaos! One day, returning back at 6pm it took 20 minutes just to get on the ramp approach to the hotel- queuing around the block on the road. Valet was about $30 per day and the only option. Also trying to get on the ramp were the condo owners whose frustrations were occasionally vented as people blocked the direct access waiting to hand keys over. They seem to have a two tier system with brown shirted people to move your car but blue shirted people doing the hand over. Occasionally it took 30 minutes to get the car- despite ringing down to valet. So if you were on a quick turnaround with an 8pm dinner reservation, you felt the need to request your car about 715- to pick it up at 740- thus blocking the ramp further given your experience!
It’s a young, vibrant hotel. Good location, pleasant staff but the valet needs some work for the price- I couldn’t help think it would be easier to self park. Lots of young beautiful people staying- maybe thats Miami! Occasionally I felt like the oldest person there- at 40!
Over the road in the Marriot is a Daniel- Bistro Moderne restaurant- excellent quality and well worth it.

Thank you for your very detailed review from your stay with us. We are disappointed to see that we fell short providing you adequate Valet service and not meeting your dining expectation in our restaurant AREA31. We are happy to hear that your overall stay was very enjoyable and that your room with its stunning views provided you the luxury and comfort for a pleasant stay. We are glad you enjoyed our complimentary coffee and tea offered each morning and that you visited us during our hosted wine hour in the evenings.
We hope to welcome you back to Miami, a very vibrant city for any age. Please be our guest again.
Best wishes,
Jacqueline Ploettner, Resort Manager

The staff were phenomenal, the hotel accommodations and amenities were top notch, and we could not have asked for more. The pool service is fantastic and the concierge was brilliant - able to help with every request for both luxury and budget services!

I absolutly loved everything about my stay at Epic Hotel! I felt amazing while staying there and I was treated like I was a queen. I love the attitude of the staff and the facilities of the hotel. Everyone works as a team and you can see how well managed the hotel is becuase of this. From now on when I book accommodation I will be looking for a kimpton hotel as the one in NYC was equally as good. Also, the roof top pool --- AMAZING!!! It's worth staying at the hotel just for the pool!

Stayed at the Epic for business and was eating at their outdoor restaurant and tasted bleach in my food. I immediately ran to the restroom and saw bleach spots all over my clothes. When I returned outside I looked up and realized someone who lives there (also residences) was pouring bleach off the balcony. They did comp my meal and buy me a new shirt which was nice.

Overall hotel is nice & clean- pool, gym & rooms.

As other commenters have said, the name is appropriate. The service is second to none, and you really never have to leav the hotel because the restauramts and bars there are exceptional. We were there for New Year's, and spent it at Zuma downstairs because there was no need to go in search of a better atmosphere or party. The pool area on the 16th floor is relaxing and full service, and I could have easily wasted days there. It was nice to have a balcony with our room to enjoy the mornings and evenings on, and the rooms themselves are more than adequate. It's pricey, but you really get your money's worth. Highly recommended.

What a fab hotel!! This was our first trip to Miami have been in many 5star hotels in the past, this definately lives up to the rest. We were on the 29th Club level floor, the staff in the club were fantastic they could not do enough for you!!! Very very friendly staff. The rooms were spot on clean quite good view, heated pools. Only a short drive from South Beach. Our only disappointment was the valet very slow and busy but it was Christmas so I give them that.
I would recommend this hotel to everyone and would definately return on my next visit to Miami

Thank you for your fabulous comments. We are thrilled you selected our club level rooms, with a variety of different food presentations throughout the day, unlimited wines, liquors and champagnes and a very private and intimate service.
We are glad you liked the rooms and our heated pools – yes, it even gets cold in Miami.
