I've been a visitor to Mexico Beach for over 30 years. The last 12 or so years I've spent a month in a beach-front house, shared by my wife, children, and grandchildren. I am an avid saltwater fisherman and keep a boat in Mexico Beach Marina. I stay in El Governor for short stays to fish or work on my boat. I've been there almost every month in the year and am an El Governor Club Member, meaning I'm offered special rates, when available.
El Governor has been around a long time and it shows. The rooms are the typical motel style and you will not be particularly impressed by your surroundings. The thing El Governor has going for it is that there are only three beach-front hotels/motels in Mexico Beach so you don't have a lot of choices. There is a bar and pool, more than the other hotels in Mexico Beach. Rooms are fairly clean and maintenance is OK. Beds are comfortable, bathrooms are small, and balconies have two chairs next to the back of the AC, which makes it hot. TV is old and small, and if you want to watch a game, go to Mango Marleys. Don't plan on cooking, but the fridge is fine to keep your drinks cold.
The Gulf beaches are magnificent on the panhandle of Florida, and that should be your primary reason to stay here. Mexico Beach is a quiet, family-friendly little town with a few good restaurants, a few good bars and miles of sugar white sand beaches that are safer than most, and that's the main attraction. For that reason alone, don't count out a stay at El Governor.
