We visited El Tucan on a Friday night at 6:00 P.M., prime time for most restaurants. The parking lot was full, and some determined folks (including us) parked on the grass or on a side street. We were told it would be a 30 minute wait, but moments after getting our name added to the wait list, a cheerful server asked us if we would like to order drinks while we were waiting. The wait time was actually a bit less than 30 minutes, and we were shown to a table in the crowded and noisy dining room.
Our server was McKayla, and she was attentive and efficient as well as cheerful. We ordered an appetizer of Queso cheese dip, and it was very, very good. I had a house margarita ($4) which was also very good, although somewhat basic. The chimichanga entree was good overall, but was served with "Colorada" sauce (for $1 extra) - I did not care for it, it had a scorched taste. The guacamole was good, although basic and in need of a bit more salt. The refried beans and rice served on the side were bland and boring--totally forgettable. Luckily, we weren't there for the refried beans and rice! The entrees along with the side dishes were enormous, easily enough to take half home for lunch the next day. i was sorry to not have room to try the flan for dessert.
Although we were there in celebration of our son's birthday, we declined dessert as we had a birthday cake waiting at home. But McKayla, our server, asked if they could sing to our son anyway, and they did, even putting a big sombrero on him. It was totally "above and beyond," - typical of the service we received throughout our dining experience.
Although there were some negative points, I rated this restaurant as "Excellent" because of the friendly and quick service. The atmosphere is laid back and fun, the decor is typical Mexican with a touch of whimsy, and most of the folks there were dressed casually. I would definitely go back again.
