“A wonderful experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2014

We drove thru the wetlands. I enjoyed that with a good pair of binoculars the variety of birds you could see. I fell in love with the sandhill cranes and their distintive walk, the mangroves were something to behold as well. Last but not least we were fortunate to see manatees.
The only thing that disapointed me was the people driving thru the wetlands while using cell phones.

“Great local birdwatching attraction, also popular with walkers, cyclists, etc.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2014

I am a birdwatcher and this is a lovely area to see many birds close by. It is a water reclamation area for the county, that became popular with locals as a place to take a brief drive, stroll or cycle to look at the many wading and other birds that gather there. It has become a popular attraction and is a welcome addition to the community. If you do not have time to drive the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, this is a fine place to get a sampling the the bird life that is to be found in this county. Other parts of Florida are very developed with few natural areas, this county is lucky to have saved much beachfront and other inland natural areas to enjoy. The nature and wildlife are one thing that make Florida special. If you are at the beach or the Space Center, take time to visit some nature related areas, such as the wetlands,to see some Florida wildlife.
One warning, sometimes areas of the wetlands are blocked off to driving, depending on the weather or overuse. At those times you need to be prepared to do some walking to enjoy the wetlands. There are no flush toilet facilities there, just a portapotty. Also, on the drive in to the wetlands from Wickham Road, west of I 95, look in the surrounding sod fields or ponds, for the occasional Caracara, Bald Eagle on the ground or wading birds at the ponds.

“Nice for a drive, walk or bike ride”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2014

Best viewing of native birds in Brevard. It is a wonderful place to see birds all year round, but it's especially nice in winter with all the seasonal visitors.

“Great for bird photography”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2014

I went twice in the past week (mid-April). Once at about 10:30 AM and the second time at 7:00 AM. Lots of birds at both hours--ranging from Great Blue Herons to Redwing Blackbirds. Saw GBHs and Anhingas on their nests with hatchlings. Plus a pair of Sandhill Cranes with small chicks. The light was very good for photographs starting about half and hour after sunrise, when the sun is high enough to shine directly on the water. Stayed very good for at least an hour. The lighting wasn't bad by late morning, just not as good as during the "golden hour." The roads circling every major pond make it easy to find spots with the sun at your back. Some birds will let you get quite close (but don't get off the roads!). I had a 300mm lens, and had to back away at several points to frame the subject. Also, there are birds flying in and out all the time for "birds in flight" pictures. Just don't expect a wilderness experience. After all, it is a water processing facility behind the local water treatment plant. All in all, though, it is an absolutely fantastic use of what might otherwise be wasted space. When you're done, there are a lot of restaurants at the Avenue shopping center nearby or back along Wickham Road. The Zoo is very close as well. (One final note, the "bathroom facilities" are Porta Potties--if that makes a difference for you.)

“Bird water paradise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 12, 2014

Take I-95 to exit 191 go west on CR 509 (Wickham Rd) 2.2 miles; entrance on the left. A great place to view birds from your auto ( so anyone can enjoy it). others hike or like the roads. Bring your binoculars and a camera with a high power lens 250mm. You will see every conceivable bird known to this part of Florida, but take time to enjoy the entire route; at least 1 and 1/2 hours. We combined this with a visit to the Brevard Botanical garden in Melborne and found this to be much more fun. A wonderful place to photograph wildlife.
