The Crane Creek Inn has the understated and unpretentious charm that I associated with my stay in Key West: simple, attractive decor; great view of Crane Creek several yards away; privacy; and plenty of porches and terraces to soak in the southern atmosphere. Breakfast was plentiful and the Inn keeper was gracious about serving us early to accomodate our meeting schedule. A short walk to the many restaurants, bars, and stores in slightly artsy Melbourne.

We stayed at this inn for three nights. The positives are that the inn is attractive and the room we stayed was comfortable. Also, Bob the host was friendly and pleasant (we never saw or met Gillian).

However, there were a number of things that could have been better.

As mentioned by several other reviewers, there are train tracks that are only a few hundred yards away from the inn. On our first night, the trains ran through the night, sounding their horns as they went through downtown Melbourne, waking us repeatedly. Unless you are a heavy sleeper, you will need to have earplugs or be lucky with the train schedule. We bought earplugs at a local pharmacy and slept well the next two nights.

The breakfasts were okay, but not great. We have stayed at many B&Bs in Canada and the United States, and would rate the food at the Crane Creek Inn as below-average. A hot breakfast is provided only on weekends. Our experience at other B&Bs is that breakfast is cooked for you when you sit down (e.g., eggs & bacon, pancakes, waffles), but in this case we were served casserole-type dishes that were left on a hot-plate in the morning. Given the cost of a night's stay ($169 per night), we expected more.

Finally, some of the amenities that are promised on the website are not what they seem. There is no longer a pedal-boat and the canoe is full of leaves and cobwebs, and looks like it hasn't been used in a long time. Access to the creek was one of the draws of this inn for us. The pool, which was another one of the features that influenced our choice of this inn, wasn't clean, again with leaves and a dead crab (!) on the bottom.

My main feedback is that the inn has a lot of potential, but the owners need to be proactive in dealing with these problems. They could warn guests about the nearby train tracks and/or provide earplugs, make more of an effort at breakfast, and show some initiative when guests drop hints about the state of the canoe or the pool.

Our feeling was that Bob was "phoning it in" in terms of his efforts during our stay. I don't think we are being unreasonable or too demanding (esp. about being upfront regarding the train tracks & the state of the amenities).

“Didn't live up to the website promises...”

Crane Creek Inn Waterfront Bed and Breakfast

This is a charming inn with well-appointed rooms and a beautiful location, however there were some significant problems.

We booked a three-day getaway to this Inn to take advantage of the peaceful location, fishing, and swimming pool. The cost is quite pricey for a B & B (we are seasoned B & B'ers) but the pool and fishing made it very attractive and worth the extra costs.

First, the location was not peaceful: There is a train trestle about a few hundred yards from the inn and the trains roar past every two hours in the middle of the night, sounding their horns. This starts at about 6pm and ends at about 6am. If you are a light sleeper, do not stay here. Some good quality ear-plugs purchased at 4am from the local drugstore helped us get some sleep during our stay. We wondered why the owners didn't discretely leave a bag of earplugs in the night stand as a courtesy to guests.

Second, the fishing was fantastic, but the paddle-boat promised on the website no longer exists and the canoe needed some TLC before it would be usable. I dropped several hints to the owner that we wanted to use it and he made no effort to tidy it up for us.

Third, the pool was dirty the entire time we stayed (three days). Again, I dropped hints that I wanted to use the pool, but nothing was done to clear out the leaves, grunge, etc. that had accumulated on the bottom. We avoided the hot tub fearing a similar state.

Fourth, the breakfast is mediocre. FYI - a hot breakfast is prepared and left on a hot plate on the weekends. On weekdays, there is a continental breakfast and you fend for yourself. Our experience at other B & Bs is that a hot breakfast is prepared every morning. Again, for a pricey B & B this was below our expectations.

In general, this is a lovely inn with great potential that is being poorly managed. For people passing through the area, one night's stay (with earplugs) will probably be just fine, even pleasant, but I would not recommend longer stays.

This lovely bed and breakfast is right on the water where if you wait long enough you can see manatees. The breakfasts are superb and the host is charming. Whenever I'm in the area, this is the only place that I like to stay.

We stayed here for my brother's wedding, and it was a shame it was raining. The b&b is right on the water and just a block from downtown. If you fish, bring your gear. You can throw a line in without going very far.
