“A Great Place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 7, 2011

We spent one week at the Surf Club. Nice place, friendly, everything you really need for a beach vacation. Beach is amazing, warm water and activities nearby. This time of the year it is quiet. We traveled with teenagers and they were hoping for younger people to 'hang out' with.
The Surf Club is clean and friendly. Try to get an ocean view room...the view is so great to have right out your window.

Room Tip: beach view for sure!!

The 2nd bedroom/shower - very small - twin beds and no TV - REALLY - for Hilton Grand Vacation owner, far from what we expected... small pool and kitchen old stuff. The bed needed better mattress and husband's back was hurting. We left day early due to that and checked into hilton with new Bed for last two nights. Our cost lost. overall OK and fair. Nice beach and pool was just so so...Needs badly remodeled in units.

Room Tip: Stay high up and overlook beach - to have view

We have just returned from the Surf Club at Marco Island and we wanted to capture all of our thoughts to assist others in choosing their vacation accommodations on Marco Island. The Surf Club is an eight storey pink stucco building on South Collier Boulevard right in the midst of the hotel strip in Marco Island. Entering you will see a nicely landscaped approach and parking lot. In addition there is a three court clay tennis court, of which more later.

We arrived on Saturday at about 5 pm. Our room was 205. The kitchen is well appointed and bright. A breakfast bar, which seats two, divides the kitchen from a combination living/dining room with comfortable and attractive furniture. The living room seats six with a sofa, love seat and a chair with an ottoman. There is a TV and a DVD (that does not seem to have a FF or REV but only PLAY - which is odd). The dining room table seats six. There is a large closet containing an easily operated safe.

There is a large master bedroom with bathroom which is pleasantly decorated. The bathroom is divided - the sink is in an alcove off the bedroom and the bathroom, directly to its right, containing the toilet and shower, is small but adequate. The king sized bed was very comfortable (and we are fairly picky about beds). There were sufficient pillows (I think 5 on the bed), bedding, ample storage space and a TV. Accessed from both the master bedroom and the living room is a large balcony with room for a table, four chairs, two chaise lounges and two side tables. The balconies of the suites on the second floor are twice as large as the balconies on other floors but the extra space is "over-looked" by the upper floors.

There is a second bedroom with two twin beds and another bathroom. This bedroom looks out on the passageway and so we kept the venetian blinds in that room closed. This bathroom has a tub/shower combination. It is also small and somewhat dark. The bedroom was nicely decorated and had a TV. We have teenagers and they enjoyed the privacy of a second bedroom and the twin beds.

For ease of loading and unloading there is an automatic door from the outside close to the elevators. The Surf Club has the usual carts for carrying luggage and also has a couple of grocery carts for toting groceries from your car to your suite. There is a laundry room on each floor. Wash is $1.50, dry is $1.25.

After arriving in the late afternoon, we went to the nearby Winn-Dixie and loaded up for the week. We then grilled our food on one of two very new and very nice Weber gas grills by the pool. Our daughter loved trying to engage the four feral cats, spayed and neutered, who nocturnally prowl the grounds for rodents.

For about $100 we rented four beach chairs and an umbrella for the week from Miguel who has a spot directly to the south from the walkway from the Surf Club to the beach. We have never rented beach chairs before but have now been spoiled by the ease of simply arriving at the beach and not having to carry chairs. Miguel took good care of us while we were there. In addition the Surf Club provides beach towels so you don't need to pack or launder your own.

Most days fell into a regular rhythm - we would walk the beach after breakfast, relax on our chairs for a while, head off to an activity, eat lunch, return to our chairs later in the day, play tennis, walk over to Capt. Briens for oysters and beer at 5 and then return to grill our dinner. There are three clay tennis courts on the property. They are well maintained and nicely landscaped. The Surf Club had adequate tennis rackets and balls. If you are a good player you will no doubt bring your own.

In the evening we played ping pong on the main floor, relaxed in the hot tub, read and watched TV. There is a library and card room also.

One day we went out on a fishing boat and caught our dinner. Another day we went on a great sail. We will review those separately. We felt Marco Island, in general, and the Surf Club, in particular was quite safe. When we went to Capt. Brien’s, or on occasion out for dinner, we felt quite comfortable leaving our children, 15 and 13, at the Surf Club. Another aspect we liked about the location of the Surf Club was its proximity to at least 10 restaurants, a couple of fun beach stores, an ice cream store (a huge treat), a 7-11 and a movie theatre. We never had to drive anywhere after we brought in our provisions and we felt safe letting our children cross Collier to get ice cream. Had there been a movie we wanted to see we would have loved walking across the street to see a movie and have dinner at the theatre. The Surf Club is probably best positioned among the hotels on South Collier to enjoy these stores and services.

The staff at the Surf Club was also very considerate. I broke a salad bowl, backed up the garbuerator and couldn't seem to get the coffee maker to work. In each instance the problem was fixed or the implement replaced cheerfully and without blame. There are a number of activities like pool water walking, a guest luncheon and cocktail party, which, while we didn't participate in because of our schedules, seemed well attended.

The Surf Club is a time share. Many of the guests during our week appeared to be long term guests who knew a number of other long term guests/friends returning as well. There were a couple of nights when some groups monopolized the barbeques, tables and hot tub for the evening. It was most notable at the beginning of the week. In addition, there were many families. We were there with our children so it was inconsequential but if one was looking for an adults only resort this would not be a choice in mid-March.

We had a wonderful time and can recommend the Surf Club without reservation.

Stellar doesn't even begin to describe this awesome vacation. My wife and I were joined by children and grandchildren for a stellar vacation. From the 8 month old to the grandparents, we all had a wonderful experience at the Surf Club. The little ones enjoyed the pool, the beach, the dolphins, the spacious room. The adults had fun as well. The Surf Club is quiet and relaxing, the staff are top notch and friendly. My only complaint is that we had to leave after one week, wish we had stayed. Don't come here if you are expecting the Taj Mahal, that's not what the Surf Club is about. The ugly pink 70's style building is just a facade for a relaxing vacation with no frills...."just the way I like it". A great choice for a family vacation. Marco Island is a secret, so don't tell anyone and spoil this SW Florida treasure.

We traded our week from our home resort on Captiva Island for a week at the Surf Club through RCI. We were not disappointed. The resort was easy to get to from Ft. Myers airport. The resort itself is smaller than some of the other properties nearby. We liked this because it was much more private. It didn't feel over crowded like some resorts. Our room was not ready when we arrived so we had lunch across the street at the little plaza that had several restaurants and shops. This proved to be very convenient for dinner on several occasions. We ate at DaVinci's for dinner twice and enjoyed it very much. You are able to walk to the plaza which is great. Our room was an ocean front room with amazing views. The room looked like it had been updated not to long ago. The room was clean and the kitchen was completely stocked with what looked like new dishes and pots and pans. The balcony had enough chairs for all of us to hang outside and watch the sunset. Both bedrooms did have tv's not that we ever really used them. We did not have maid service but they did a towel swap in the middle of the week. There is a washer/dryer on the floor. I thought that should have been complimentary but they charged $1.25 for per load. Not really a big deal though. It is very easy to get to the beach. The access path is right in front of the resort. There are chairs and umbrellas that are available for rent, which we did because it was extremely hot. I did see some people who had brought their own chairs and umbrellas., but most people rented. Again, I thought the chairs should be complimentary also. My boys used the tennis courts everyday. They were very well maintained and there was never a problem getting a court. There were also 2 shuffleboard lanes that we used on several occasions. We were told that it was off season when we were there so the restaurants were not that crowded. We tried several different ones. DaVinci's and Arturo's were our favorites, but we also liked Pelican Bend on the Isle of Capri. We went fishing one day which was a blast. Our captain was Bubby Hail, Florida's Finest Fishing Native Guide. We caught a ton of fish and we were able to take it back to be cooked at one of the local restaurants. We went to the Snook Inn that night. Our snapper and mackerel were fantastic! We would definitely go back to The Surf Club!

Easy access to one of the best beaches on the planet! Our condo was Gulf front with a georgous view and ocean breezes. We could see a few miles of beaches to our right and left. Coming over the bridge to "our " island we fell in love immediately, and were not disappointed upon our arrival to The Surf Club. There are luxury accomodations around Marco Island that are certainly more sophisticated (and expensive) but we enjoy the small quaint resort for its charm and above all its location. The grounds are beautiful with a palm tree lined entrance that we saw people photographing on a couple of occaisions. We were surprised to find clay tennis courts and a large uncrowded pool area. Our condo was a two bedroom, two bath and was clean and airy. We found we had wireless internet access in the room and three televisions, but we didnt stay in the room much. There are restuarants, and a comedy club within walking distance and even a movie theater where you can enjoy dinner. The Everglades National Park encompasses a huge area directly south and east of Marco Island. There are any number of boat tours and airboat tours. We could watch the parasailing all day from our balcony. We enjoyed the sunny beach during the daytime and the smell of suntan lotion, evenings out for elegant dinners switching to perfume and aftershave to give our toasted skin a rest! We really had the time of our lives but didnt break the bank!
