We stayed at the Marriot in April 2006. We understood it was Spring Break and expected it to be crowded. Much to our dismay, it was more than crowded; the hotel simply could not handle the number of guests. We paid Four Season’s prices for Motel 8 service. It was a terrible Marriot experience.
Our main issue was the beach equipment. At 87 degrees and a cloudless sky access to an umbrella was essential. On day one at 8am we stood in-line for 1 hour and 30 minutes to reserve: four rusty metal and vinyl beach chairs, four worn-out thin towels and one flimsy umbrella – all for the price of $12.95. I can’t believe the Marriot charged me for waiting in-line over an hour on a vacation!
Worried that our family would have to wait each morning, I inquired about a palapa – a larger permanent thatched roof umbrella. These beauties were $26.95 a day and included four bottles of semi-cold water. The first available palapa was on our vacation day three, which we reserved. As for vacation day two, we were put on the Palapa waiting list. We would have liked to have sat at pool for free but every chair was taken. Plus, with 50 plus kids in the pools, the sanitation issue crossed our minds.
Bottom line, the beach was managed improperly. The Marriot controlled the distribution of their umbrellas and chairs so that they could ensure the collection of their money. This system wasted our precious family time and caused great irritation. We travel frequently and this is the only hotel that coveted their chairs. All other resorts we’ve stayed at set-up their chairs and umbrella’s before the guests awake. No waiting, no fees.
Instead, below is a list of our other disappointments:
•None smoking room smelled like smoke.
•Balconies were rusty and had peeling paint
•Plastic balcony chairs (available at Home Depot for $5 a piece)
•In room internet $12.95 per day (wireless is free now in many places!)
•Daily fee to use the Spa facilities did not include the use of the pool
Needless to say we will not be returning to the Marriot Marco Island Spa and Resort again!
