Hello all. I am a Canadian expat working in China. I travel often and I recently chose the Hilton Longboat Key hotel for my trip to Sarasota, Fl. Below is my review:
I was in Florida for a friends wedding in Sarasota and I opted to stay on the beach at the Hilton, but it wasn't exactly what I had expected.
First of all, the Hilton is located on Longboat Key which is a good 20 minute drive from Sarasota; in fact the hotel is pretty isolated and to get anywhere is a good 20min. Location is key, if you want a relaxed spot on the beach then this is a decent option. If you want to be closer to the city and be close by to do a bit of shopping I would say stay in Lido Beach or in Sarasota proper.
The hotel itself is old. It has the feel of a local hotel but under the Hilton banner. It is decent enough, old paint job, old bathrooms and very slow broadband access via floor wide wireless routers. Note, there is no in room internet access, but at least it was free. Basically, the hotel is old and overpriced, and you are paying a premium for being on the water.
I had previously read a few reviews saying that the staff were not very professional; I DID NOT find that to be true. I felt the staff were very helpful during my five days there and the buffet breakfast and waitresses were pleasant.
The Hilton Longboat is an older hotel on the beach; if you aren't passionate about the Gulf of Mexico I would say your money is better spent at the Ritz or Hyatt in town.
