“Rules over customers”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2010

The liberal use of exclamation points following their posted rules should have been a clue. We have been there twice and actually like the place, although the rooms and furnishings are close to austere. What finished it for us this year was simply the attitude of the female innkeeper, Mary Lou. Seems that a coffee-spotted $1.00 dish towel was the most important issue for her during our $7000.00 stay. It was necessary for her to come to our room at 9PM to discuss very irritatingly how we were not keeping them clean enough and the spots forced her to throw them away. NOTE---this was at 9PM and over a couple of cheap dishtowels. Funny thing---she never came to us to ask how our visit was going. The reason for the 9PM visit, as she says, was that she works during the day---but, the very next night she was seen at the outside hut at 5:30PM. Sorry, Mary Lou, but your actions, over a few cheap dishtowels, cost you another $5 or $7,000 visit by us. Maybe you are more concerned by petty things than for making your customers visits relaxing---sure seems like it. I would recommend this place, but not as long as this attitude exists.

My husband just spent a long weekend at the Sandpiper, room 103. There are wonderful things about the Inn - the grounds are beautiful, so clean and inviting. The location could not be better, right on a very very beautiful beach - not sure how long but it seems you could walk for miles.
The rooms are clean and comfortable. We were there during the cold spell and there was a portable heater that pretty much did the job. So yes, it would seem like it was a great stay. Unfortunately it was not. Now maybe this is not an issue for you and if not so be it and disregard this review. But if taking a decent shower, if a decent hot shower is a priority, the Sandpiper is probably not for you. Because of the weather it was more important than ever to have a hot shower with some pressure. The shower had no pressure (NONE NONE NONE) and was luke warm at best. Richard, the innkeeper, did make a gallant effort to check the shower, the water, but then said that is just the way it is. I spoke with another couple about the shower and they sort of laughed and said it was absolutely the same in their room. Maybe only these 2 rooms?
Again, if this is not important than it is no big deal - for my husband it was huge.

And please guys - no excuses!

We completely agree with you about the need for a hot shower especially during the recent prolonged cold snap, (that has not occurred in Florida in over 40 years). We are sorry we were unable to fix the problem while you stayed with us, however we did have plumber come to replace a defective part in the unit. The water pressure and water temperture have been restored to proper levels in all units.
Please accept our apology for your inconvenience as we continue to restore this Old Florida Property.

Like every year it was a fantastic vacation on a fantastic place! We come from Germany to Florida for every year since 2005 and it is impossible not to visit this beautiful accomodation during our trip. Okay, there's no daily room service, no breakfast or dinner, you should know, but the Sandpiper Inn is NOT a hotel, there are only 12 appartements, so you can be on your own, if you want to, it is absolutely peaceful and quiet there. Pure relaxation!!! You can stay for a few nights, if there's vacancy, but I recommend to book in advance for a week or more to get the full recreation from working! The innkeepers are so friendly, we soon became friends with them and are always looking forward to see them again.
Last but not least: the sunsets! I do not know any other place on earth, where you can enjoy the sunsets like there! No crowded beach, just a handful of humans, but a mass of animals, so you only hear the seagulls, sandpipers and the sound of the ocean and watch the sun disappear at the horizon. Perfect... Don't go into a hotel on Longboat Key, you will regret it. You do not want to share this perfect moments with foreign people! We'll be back!!!

We're giving five BIG STARS (we'd give MORE if that was an option!) to this wonderful, magnificent, heavenly place. The Sandpiper Inn never fails us - a beautiful, quiet and relaxing setting with unlimited views of plush gardens and the beautiful beach looking out on to the Gulf of Mexico (the sunsets are to die for!).

Our room was lovely, clean and airy - at times, we simply turned off the A/C, opened up the windows, and let the ceiling fans do all the work. A large living room/dining area/kitchen allowed us to spread out our belongings and kick-back. The bedroom was huge, and we were greeted with a new mattress/boxsprings and headboard - totally relaxing and lovely. Shampoos and soaps greeted us in the cozy bathroom.

The managers are an absolute JOY! Their professionalism is unsurpassed, and we consider them dear and special friends. Their love for the Sandpiper is clearly evident. We were also lucky enough to be there when one of the owners was visiting - it's clear that the owners AND management take great pride and joy in this property.

As the owners have already replied to the most recent posting, we won't go into a great amount of detail, but we have NEVER experienced ANY of the complaints that this family expressed. We were on the beach for two weeks and never found ANY evidence of sand fleas (ants tended to be a problem if the lounge chairs were set too close to the seagrass - a common problem on ALL parts of the beach). Fortunately, we didn't encounter a jellyfish, but - last year - I was the victim of a stingray bite (about 500 feet from the property), and the managers were absolutely fabulous in making sure I received the proper medical care.

The statements made by this family that the Sandpiper is "dirty" and a "flea bag" are TOTALLY unfounded and have NO merit. The rooms are so clean that you could virtually eat off of the floors. The pool - while small - is VERY relaxing, and umbrellas are within reaching distance (umbrellas are also located throughout the property on each porch, in the cabana area, in the BBQ area, etc., etc.).

PLEASE don't let one family's opinions stop YOU from visiting this beautiful and heavenly place. We intend to go back year after year, as there's no place we'd rather spend our vacation!

The Sandpiper Inn is simply "Paradise on Earth."

We were looking to stay at a nice beach hotel that had access to the beach and a nice pool.
My son was stung by a jellyfish and my daughter was attacked by sand fleas. I know this in no the fault of the hotel, but since we couldn't enjoy the beach, the pool was our next choice. The pool here isn't much larger than a hot tub. There are no umbrellas and no shade anywhere. When my daughter turned on the jets to the pool the owner came out and yelled at her.
We decided that after one night we had enough. We gave them plenty of notice and left before 10AM. They charged us for two nights. Dirty, Unfair and Unfriendly.
Avoid this flea bag motel!

I must disagree with your comments: The Sandpiper Inn Longboat Key, FL is not dirty, unfair, nor unfriendly. There is plenty of shade on our property, we have umbrellas at each unit and the BBQ area. In addition, we have a covered wooden cabana right on the beach with tables and chairs where guests are able to watch our fabulous sunsets, look at wildlife, work on your laptop, or enjoy a meal.
Yes, our property is a low key "Old Florida" building and we are working hard to update the furnishings, (in fact , we replaced all of our mattresses in August 2009) to match our beautiful garden environment and the outstanding beach. I assure you each of our 11 units are extremely clean as mentioned by previous tripadvisor reviewers.
If you researched our property, we are very honest on our website, and as you can see when you check in, our pool, is heated, but very SMALL.
You had every opportunity to examine our facility before checking in and deciding to stay. As with any lodging property there is a cancellation policy.
I assure you and others we are certainly not a "flea bag motel". We are not a resort, nor do we pretend to be, we are part of "Forgotten Florida", a clean, family and pet friendly establishment on one of the best beaches in North America.
As someone who has been bitten by a jellyfish and sand fleas I can understand the pain experienced by your children and I hope they are doing well.
Life is always Better at the Beach.

Christine Gorman Cullison

This was my 3rd year coming to Sandpiper Inn. We searched a long time to find a small hotel that was not brimming with people, blasting boomboxes, yelling kids, immature teenagers, and loud, uncivilized guests. I've been to places that had all of this and more. It was like staying in the middle of an amusement park sometimes. People often have no respect for their neighbors at the big hotels... slamming things around in the middle of the night, fighting with each other, etc. I LOVE the fact the Sandpiper Inn has the rules it does. Yes, some may not like to behave themselves, clean up after yourself, etc. So let those kind of people go elsewhere. That's why we come here! Our idea of a vacation is relaxing, having quiet time on the beach... reading, spending time with each other.. swimming and collecting shells. It's our paradise! If people want to party, go to a club, take a short trip into Sarasota where there is so much to do and see. When you've got people that are respectful, enjoy quiet, apprieciate nature, the "rules" are no big deals because that's how you'd behave anyway. As for the pet policy, I see some are complaining they charge too much. A friend of mine was recently travelling with her cat and the hotel charged $30.00 a night per pet. I 'd say this place is a good deal then! I love animals but a dog barking next door that isn't attended to is not my idea of a pleasant stay The managers were always very nice and helpful to us. I'm glad they hold high standards. It keeps the Sandpiper Inn a super place to stay, and we're going back next year!

My family and I have traveled all over the world, and I have been to alot of great places.
When we arrived at the Sandpiper I was taken in by the to lovely people, Richard and Mary Lou. They made us feel like family and we had one of the best vacations we have ever had! The rooms are spacious and extremely clean! My wife is a clean freak and she actually relaxed on this trip! The grounds are a tropical aumbiance that warms your soul! There is a paved path through the middle that has a emerald green sea water at the end!
The water is crystal clear with clean and quiet white sandy beaches. I am a fishing guide just a hour north in Tampa, FL and also was able to catch several nice Snook just behind the hotel in the surf! I had made with the wife tanning on the beach and me catching great fish and doing what I love, it was the best of both Worlds!! yeah!!! There are also great restaurants across the street and you don't even have to start the car! Incredible is all I can say! This will be one of our returning vacations year after year with our new Family Richard and Mary Lou at The Sandpiper!
