“Just OK - definitely NOT what is portrayed in pictures on website”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 19, 2010

We live in Florida and travel to the keys several times a year - we try to stay at different places in varying locations to keep things interesting. When I saw teh website for Lime tree Bay I was blown away - it looked amazing and was so affordable. I should have known better! The pics are of the resort but that photgrapher worked some amazing magic with angles and lighting because the resort is v run down compared to what the website portrays. That really bothers me - if the website was more accurate I think I would have rated it higher - but as it stands I feel like they pulled a bit of a bait and switch. But for the keys accomodations in general and for the price - it is a good deal.
PRO's - views are amazing, rooms and grounds were kept clean, pool and jacuzzi were great, right next door to a great boat and jet ski rental place, free use of kayaks, free use of business center and wireless access is also a nice touch
CON's - leaky toilets, rooms and grounds were WELL past their prime, musty smell, loud road noise, walls thin so you hear everything yoru neighbor is doing, front desk staff kinda acted like we were bothering them by even being there.

And a word about location to be aware of - it is right in between Islamorada and Marathon and you can't get a pizza or any other delivery to save your life! Driving 10-15 miles along a busy highway for every meal, except for those eaten at Little Italy next door, was not ideal.

I am rating this hotel on what it is..a 3 star property. The grounds were lovely, our Captain Herbie suite had the most beautiful veiw and largest deck I have ever seen! The kids loved the free kayaks. Comfy hammocks amd beach chairs. Great location in middle of overseas highway, really, I was expecting much less and was so pleasantly surprised. Comparing prices and accomadations this was was a value to be sure! I wish we had booked a longer stay than just overnight!

Name is nice. View was beautiful if you looked out at the water, but our room also faced the back of the italian restaurant, which was not pretty and there was even a toilet sitting under the palm tree by our room! We stayed in Room 127, and there were mattresses stacked on their side under our room on a slab porch. Those 2 sites made me concerned right away. Pool was clean but cold, and jacuzzi was not working. Main bedroom was nice. Second bedroom smelled musty and was small, bed was squeaky. The bathroom was run down - when we sat on the toilet, there was a leak at the base of the toilet and water trickled down the ceramic tile on the floor. There was a fan hanging from the bathroom ceiling, non working, and we didn't even see a switch for it! The lights in the 2nd bedroom were on a switch that also turned on the closet light at the same time. Painted nicely but seemed run down. All of the doors in the place looked like they could have used a "Magic Eraser" sponge to clean off all of the fingerprints. Neighbors were up at 7am talking and smoking on the porch next to our unit. We had the window open and the smoke came in, as did their loud talking. We were disappointed. It seemed to us like the management just couldn't keep up with the repairs of the place or something. This was the most expensive place that we had stayed in our entire trip to and from Key West. We had never vacationed in Florida before, but I felt like our trip was like a "retro" trip back in time. I guess some people really like Old Florida. 2 highlights were the kayaks we were able to take out in the water, and also going out for dinner to the Islamoralda Fish Company. This place could be a gold mine to someone if they could keep up the maintenance of the "resort" because the location on the water is amazing, but I can't recommend this to anyone at this time until they can fix it up better..

We stayed in the new condos that the Lime Tree just opened across the street from the main resort. The one bedroom condo was clean, sparsely decorated, and had a large kitchen and sitting area. The condo had a large balcony that overlooked the canal and part of the highway. The good: brand new, room to spread out, convienent canal front location to dock a boat, friendly staff, and acceptable housekeeping. The bad: right on the highway with plenty of road noise while you try to sleep or relax, the "tempurpedic" mattress was a cheap knock off that felt like sleeping on a sponge...definitely more comfortable on the couch. Overall, we were comfortable with our lodging and feel that this place was definitely better than most of the places in the Keys that claim to be a "resort".

My husband and I and another couple stayed at the Zane Grey Townhouse number 1. The townhouse was in excellent condition and very well appointed. However, when we arrived and registered on the Lime Tree Resort side we were hit by a sickening sulfur smell that we later identified as coming from a landfill about 1/2 mile away. Fortunately, on the townhouse side we did not notice the stink most of the time, even while sitting on the deck overlooking the canal. It did linger across by the bay, pool and lovely plantings with hammocks. Speaking of the road, the townhouse are a few feet from US Route 1 which has a steady stream of traffic except in the wee hours of the morning. Two of the bedrooms face the road and traffic noise may disturb sleep. Also we were a bit disappointed with the housekeeping which is billed as daily maid service. Actually, it was fresh towels and that was about it. Long Key is a quiet small area with a state park within walking distance. It is a convenient half way point to hang out and use as a staging area to visit the other more populous, popular Keys. Despite the drawbacks, the Lime Tree Bay Resort was a good value.

We spent 2 days here and loved the place. Super clean rooms and nice grounds. The pool was top notch and the view was awesome. The gulf was not in good condition when we stayed but nothing you can do about mother nature. They did claim to have internet but that was not the case. There is really nothing around it, except for an Italian restaurant that was over priced and not very good. But the rooms and the view were worth the money. I would recommend to others to stay here but plan to drive to get to anything to do or eat. But in the Keys that is pretty normal.

We stayed in a standard two bed room.

This hotel passes on the two most important things to me: it's clean and it's quiet. Also, he room was large and fairly well appointed, the service was very good, and the grounds are nice. However, several things prevented me from giving it a better rating. The bathroom needed a complete rehab. I appreciated the large walk-in shower but the vanity and mirror were completely corroded and the water from the faucet sprayed at us instead of the sink. We heard other guests complaining about the bathrooms (I won't repeat the language they used). Also, the paint and drywall on the ceiling are stained, cracked and pealing. Despite all the good about the hotel, the bathroom and the ceiling made it feel more dumpy. Also to the downside was the smell (as noted in other reviews) and its isolation from restaurants and bars (Little Italy is good for dinner but the breakfast is so-so and there is no outdoor seating). I could take the isolation and the smell by themselves, but they do not help the overall experience when combined with the bathroom and ceiling. Next time, I think we will pay up for something nicer.

By the way, mid-way cafe is 10 min. north and a great alternative to Little Italy for breakfast.
