My husband and I just returned from a fabulous 3-nite stay at Little Palm in celebration of my 30th birthday! We had been there three years ago for brunch only, and vowed to return then; boy, were we glad we did! Upon arriving, we were warmly greeted and I was promptly wished a 'Happy Birthday'...check-in was hassle-free, and everything from that point pretty much was. We loved our room, despite having a handicap room with no tub, but a nice oversize shower. I don't think you could go wrong in the room department, considering there's only 28, and all have superb views of the ocean and beautiful natural surroundings, etc. Housekeeping was excellent, timely and accomodating in our requests for more firm pillows. We felt the bed was extremely comfortable: yes, it's high but ours is too, so we're used to that and love the feel. The mosquito netting around it was a neat touch and really added to the already overwhelming feeling that we were in the South Pacific, or some other far-flung locale. Which brings me to my next point. We loved the whole ambience of the island, with the flavor of Fiji or Tahiti, etc. Everything is so incredibly lush, and the buildings and decor are beautifully and tastefully done in that South Seas style. What's neat is that it is SO not an ordeal to actually get to this place, unlike those other destinations. However, you REALLY feel like you're far, far away from home. We loved that part of it. Pool is clean and pool area is lovely and relaxing, situated in a neat little grove of palm trees, for just the right amount of sun and shade. Beach area with lounges is nice in theory, however when we were there, it wasn't really the best for swimming, with a REAL low tide all the time and lots of debris in the water. This is partially due to the lack of rainfall in that area, so I'm sure it's not a serious issue all the time. Speaking of lounges, it really is neat how they position the lounge chairs in cool little areas all over the island. You never know when or where you'll stumble over a pair! It certainly does invite you to just drop your beach bag, which is provided to you for your stay, wherever the spirit moves you, and you can't go wrong for a great view. I did the spa one day, and I had the Massage Medley and the Euro Facial, both of which were excellent! I am a spa 'junkie', and consider myself fairly educated in that department, and was definitely not disappointed by either of the treatments that I chose. Both therapists were top notch, and the atmosphere in the actual treatment rooms of Spa Terre is wonderful and the rooms themselves some of the most beautiful I've seen. You can't go wrong with a Schonbeck chandelier glistening on the ceiling of a thatched-roof hut! What neat decor, like I mentioned before! Our dining experiences were mostly great, with a couple exceptions. Breakfasts were fresh and tasty, nothing too different, but all you need to feel good starting the day. Lunches were great, with a nice selection too. Dinner appetizers were delicious, however some of the entrees left a little to be desired. We both felt on a couple occasions where the fresh catch that we ordered were way too overpowered by buttery sauces. You couldn't get the true flavor of the dish you ordered because all it tasted like was butter! That was a little disappointing, but at least the desserts more than made up for that! Excellent choices, and key lime pie was the best we've had! On my birthday, my husband set up a private dining experience at Palapa Point, which I would highly recommend for anyone going to celebrate a special time. This is a little open-air bungalow with the outdoor drapes tied back, and situated right on a pretty little grassy point along the water, with a stunning view of the sunset. Upon arriving, it was lit up like a little gem, with sparkling moroccan-style lanterns everywhere, and candles all over the table, and rose petals scattered all over the place too! We had our own lovely server, Jackie, who was a great combination of upbeat, fun and unobtrusive all at the same time. She added to the experience so much, we left her our welcome bottle of champagne! This time our entrees were delicious too, as was everything else, and my coconut sorbet, which arrived in it's shell, even had two sparklers in it for my bday! Don't think twice about doing Palapa Point for a private meal, it's well worth it! We also opted for the Backcountry Safari, which is a guided boat tour of the keys and wildlife, etc. We happened to have it to ourselves, and we did have a nice time, but it wasn't really worth the $200/person. We were out for about 4 hours, and just cruised around and the captain pointed out some vague points of interest, and anchored out at not the most picturesque spot in our minds. Being boaters ourselves, I guess we were expecting something a little more unique than cruising around. We did see a pod of dolphins on the way back, so that made it worthwhile at the time! In conclusion, check-out was seamless and our rental car was waiting with the AC on, and cold bottles of water in the front. No paperwork to sign which was nice. And we both commented on the fact that even though our stay was short compared to most vacations we go on, we felt as though three nites actually was just enough to get the flavor of the place, but not get bored before it was time to go. It's small, and there isn't a TON to do, so it's nice to leave just wanting a little more. I give Little Palm a 9 out of 10, because overall we absolutely loved everything and had a fantastic time, but like I mentioned above, there were several little details that could have been better, especially when you're paying this price. As avid travellers, and some who have stayed at numerous Four Seasons, Ritz, Peninsula and Rosewood properties, we were definitely pleased and will return again in the future!
