I ventured to Cap's Place with bated breath as the last time I had eaten there was in the early sixties. I had fond memories of the place but through a child's eyes. The nightmare started with calling Cap's and being informed that we absolutely needed a reservation. We were a bit shocked when we arrived at Cap's and almost no one was there. Why insist on a reservation? The food was a huge letdown. I felt like my Mom had just plopped down dinner on the table. I'm talking over cooked greenbeans, mashed potatoes and a few pieces of small fish, two scallops and two shrimp for what Cap's called their "Fisherman's Platter" At $32.00 I expected much better quality. I would have been much happier if the meal was priced at about 13.00 dollars. It appears that Cap's Place has Goumet prices for almost little effort in the kitchen. The biggest problem was their heralded "Hearts of Palm" salad (smallest at about 12.00 bucks). Think 1960's again.....the salad was the hearts tossed in mayonaise with a dash of paprika????? Nasty, over dressed and uneatable. The Coconut pie was priced at about 6 bucks for a sliver of pie that wasn't nearly as good as the waiter presented it as. Poor quality whipped cream, strong pineapple taste. Overall we liked the boat trip, though the "captain" had a tip jar right in front of all customers. Overall bill with two glasses of wine was 120.00 before tip. We walked out feeling used. The place is old. Wish their menu was more moderate with good fresh fish. Don't waste your money. Maybe Cap's Place is ready to be a museum. It is not a place to eat. My mom says you can't go home again....she was right.
I was here a couple of times long ago, and all I remember is that I loved it. Then I read some poor reviews here, so I was a little anxious this time. No need. It's as good as I remember.
Rustic shanty buildings, one the bar, the other the restaurant. The food -- superb! My two companions agreed -- best crab cakes they ever had. And the hearts of palm salad...if you're used to the canned, this is a revelation. They say they are harvested fresh and brought in from Okeechobee exclusively for Cap's. The snapper (yellowfin), lightly dredged, then broiled, is the best I've ever had. Service is perky, and you get a little history spiel.
The short boat ride from the parking lot to the restaurant is unique and makes for an adventure after dark. This really is a taste of "old Florida".
Fresh Fish is the only way I like it...3/18/08
For my husband's birthday we decided to try Cap's even though I am not a seafood fan. The boat ride is a short endevour to the island. The boardwalk leads to the bar and restaurant. It is an old Florida building, offering a rustic romantic feeling. The hostess was attentive and we were seated promptly. Their menu offers something for everyone. From chicken and steak to Mahi Mahi (or as we Floridians call it...Dolphin), Yellow Tail Snapper, Shrimp and Lobster, They also offer several cooking styles. We had their crab cake appetizer which was creamy on the inside with huge clumps of crab. I have never had a crab cake like it. My husband had the seafood platter; sauteed with shrimp, scallops, snapper and dolphin. I tried a bit of everything, and each bite melted in my mouth. I had the cajun blackened dolphin, which it was exactly that, cajun. It was delicious. The portions were enormous. We have leftovers! Their dinner comes with a choice of salad, which was also a large portion, and fresh. The sides were green beans, with either mashed sweet potatoes or BLT mashed potatoes. BLT mashed potatoes sounds a little odd, but they were excellent. After speaking with the waitress to tell her of my new found liking for various types of seafood, she said all their fish is caught that day. Unless you caught it yourself, and grilled it on the boat, it doesn't get any fresher than that, This is definitely worth a try. Unlike Red Lobster, you can cut Cap's fish with a fork or spoon...no knife required!
A good example of old Florida. Family operated restaurant with well prepared seafood and an interesting place to eat. The short boat ride to the island from the marina adds to the experience. The food prices seemed a little high.
