Fresh Fish is the only way I like it...3/18/08
For my husband's birthday we decided to try Cap's even though I am not a seafood fan. The boat ride is a short endevour to the island. The boardwalk leads to the bar and restaurant. It is an old Florida building, offering a rustic romantic feeling. The hostess was attentive and we were seated promptly. Their menu offers something for everyone. From chicken and steak to Mahi Mahi (or as we Floridians call it...Dolphin), Yellow Tail Snapper, Shrimp and Lobster, They also offer several cooking styles. We had their crab cake appetizer which was creamy on the inside with huge clumps of crab. I have never had a crab cake like it. My husband had the seafood platter; sauteed with shrimp, scallops, snapper and dolphin. I tried a bit of everything, and each bite melted in my mouth. I had the cajun blackened dolphin, which it was exactly that, cajun. It was delicious. The portions were enormous. We have leftovers! Their dinner comes with a choice of salad, which was also a large portion, and fresh. The sides were green beans, with either mashed sweet potatoes or BLT mashed potatoes. BLT mashed potatoes sounds a little odd, but they were excellent. After speaking with the waitress to tell her of my new found liking for various types of seafood, she said all their fish is caught that day. Unless you caught it yourself, and grilled it on the boat, it doesn't get any fresher than that, This is definitely worth a try. Unlike Red Lobster, you can cut Cap's fish with a fork or spoon...no knife required!

“An interesting old Florida experience”

A good example of old Florida. Family operated restaurant with well prepared seafood and an interesting place to eat. The short boat ride to the island from the marina adds to the experience. The food prices seemed a little high.

After a recent visit on July 28th 2007, I have found what I believe is the worst resturant I have ever been to.
It certainly does have a lot of history behind it, but I believe the original owner would be turning in his grave if he knew what the place was like today.
Horribly overpriced for what it is. The only thing found worth eating were the rolls and a crabcake.
Take the photos and newspaper clippings from 40-80 years ago and put them in a museum, then tear the palce down and turn it into a condo.

We found Cap’s Place to be very disappointing. For food served the prices were excessively high. Food was OK but I have had better at chain restaurants like Red Lobster. Our waiter was condescending and made rude remarks. It is the only restaurant that I have been to in a long time that does not offer free refills on soft drinks and does not offer either Equal or Splenda. My wife was also weirded out by all the cats that surrounded the place and the fact the were feeding them while we were waiting to be seted.

This is a novelty experience and fun for travelers and visiting guests. The boat ride is short and if you are lucky you will get a bit of local history on the ride over. The bar is very rustic and the old historical pictures on the wall are worth a perusal. Once you get past the gruff gatekeeper (the hostess) who has been miserable every time I go, the waitstaff should be friendly. The food is decent. They have been known for their heart of palm salad, which I thought was less than thrilling. However on our last visit I didn't even see it on the menu and heard no mention of it by the waiter. The food is decent. Our guests from out of town really enjoyed their experience there.
