“Good Eco Tourism”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2012

This preserve was started as a wetlands mitigation project by Disney and is maintained by the Nature Conservancy. If you want to see Florida in its true natural state, this is the place to go.

“A nice break from the Maddening Crowds”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2012

Decided to check out this place, as a switch from our usual park hopping/shopping trip. It is off the beaten path, to a Florida I don't normally see. There is a driving loop, with a bypass that you can read signage telling you a bit about the park & what you can see. I'm sure if we had had binocs we could have seen wildlife in the vast expanse of fields that were there. The drive lead us to a small group of buildings, park & enter, there is a small display & a person there who can give you information. There are hiking trails (please remember to sign in & OUT) You can also make your DONATION there, the Preserve is free. So be generous so the Nature Conservancy can continue their good work. There are building that I guess, are used for classroom type demonstrations. There are many shaded places to sit, even rocking chairs for the nonhikers. There are also bathroom facilities. We began our hike, but due to an injury we couldn't do the 2.5 mile loop , there is also a 1 mile hike to Lake Russell. No worries, at the first little pond there was an alligator! So in spite of not seeing the Pileated woodpecker or Red-Cockaded woodpecker we were happy. If you want something completely different from the crowds & craziness & wallet emptying, check out the Wilderness Preserve.
Please note it's open 9-5 on WEEKDAYS. There are not open on the Weekends.
Please note it is Florida, if hiking wear appropriate footgear,& bring bug spray, water & wear a hat.

“Very nice break from the resort action.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2012

We visited the preserve after 5 days at the Disney parks; it was good to get away from the crowds and 'concrete jungle'. The preserve was about a 25 minutes drive and well worth the drive. No characters, no cast members (unless the volunteer caretaker counts) - this place is run by The Nature Conservancy. On our visit we saw an alligator, black snakes w/gray underside (looked a bit like garter snakes) and herons. The area appears to have been burned out a few years ago and it is recovering nicely. Only knock I'd give the place is the hours; it really should be open on Saturdays to give working locals an opportunity to visit.
