My husband, 2 kids, my parents, and I just returned from Calypso Cay (last week of October, 2004). It was our first trip to Florida and really didn't know what to expect. We booked online through a timeshare deal where we received 4 nights stay and 2 theme park tickets for roughly $200. The only stipulation was that we had to attend a 90 minute timeshare presentation. My husband and I didn't really know too much about timeshares so we thought that it would be interesting to attend. After I booked however, I went online and read many horror stories about high pressure salespeople and awful experiences with timeshare presentations. I was hoping that this was not going to be the case.
To my delight, our timeshare salesman was very polite and kind. He immediately informed us that there would be no pressure for us to purchase and explained to us the details of their timeshare property and took us for a tour. After learning all we could about Calypso Cay, we decided that we were not really a family that would get the most out of purchasing a timeshare so we declined to purchase- no hard feelings. We spoke briefly with his manager and once again declined politely- again no hard feelings. Finally, we met with a corporate manager who wanted to find out how our experience with the presentation was. She also wanted to offer us a discounted trial membership, but we declined as well - still no hard feelings. Then they let us go and we claimed our tickets to Universal Studios. Each ticket entitled us to 2 consecutive days at the park which we thought were super! Although we basically had to decline the timeshare offer 3 times, the people were still very pleasant and wished us well.
The hotel itself was great! My 3 year old love the pool with waterslide and the free mini golf. The continental breakfast filled our bellies each morning with waffles, bagels, cereal, coffee, tea, juice, oranges and bananas. The mini fridge and microwave was very useful because we had baby food for our 5 month old to store.
Nearby was a Publix grocery store and there's plenty of shopping in the area from flea markets to a retail outlet mall (gap, old navy, carter's, osh kosh, reebok..and more).
I would definitely stay there again and maybe even buy a timeshare if I'm ready by then.
