We were a little worried when we arrived at our destination, which was not marked with any signage, just an address on what appeared to be a house! We had arrived early and waited. Captain Andy arrived early and debriefed us on safety, as well as, what to do in case of an emergency!
We donned our headsets, which allowed us to communicate with each other, as well as with our guide and headed out for our adventure. Captain Andy talked about the flora and fauna of the swamp area, which is a large lake. We saw numerous birds, learned about the differences between cattails and bullrushes (I never knew there was a difference), learned that there were a number of species of fish, including: bass, tallapia, and more, saw a water snake, the difference between crocodiles and alligators, and then began to spot gators.
They were difficult to see at first, but as we got accustomed to the swamp, we were delighted with numerous sightings! Every time we saw one, he would slow down, so we could get a better look, take photos, ask questions, etc. He even took a photo of all of us. We were especially thrilled to see Big John, and older male alligator, who was over 15 feet long! We saw a second, almost as large gator a little later on, as well as several younger ones.
He explained the life cycle, from nest building, egg laying, hatching and caring of the young, of the alligator and provided information about conservation projects for the Florida alligators. He showed us a nesting site, which was not currently being used. We also learned about how temperature of the nest determines if the babies will be male or female. So much information in just over an hour! Amazing!
When asked how fast the air boat could go, he demonstrated.1 Then for a thrill - he did a 360! Fun!
Time well spent on the adventure of a lifetime! Thank you for an amazing experience on a beautiful day in Florida!
