“Old fashioned charm”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2014 via mobile

Like a previous reviewer, we booked for just two nights, thinking we would then move to Key West. Well after going to Key West for the day, we decided to stay another two nights at Blue Waters. Yes, the place is old-style 50's, but our unit# 16 was quite spacious and very clean, despite the worn appliances and woodwork, and the price was reasonable compared to what was being charged in Key West. The pool is great, tables around the grounds for dining or just relaxing. The large wooden chairs at the waters edge were a great spot to gaze at the Gulf of Mexico or watch the pelicans. We would happily stay here again if our travels take us back to Marathon.

We initially booked for 2 nights, then added 2 more, then 1 more. We hated to leave! We stayed in Room 12 which was large and had a big bathroom and full kitchen. There are tables, chairs, BBQ Grills, swing scattered outside. We had our own carport and clothesline. There is a washer/dryer on site. When you're in the nice pool you're looking at the Gulf of Mexico. We took our coffee out to the dock in the morning where again there is seating and it's right on the water. Pelicans and other birds all around. So relaxing!! This is and older motel but that adds to the beach charm. Plenty of big hotels in the area is that's what you're looking for. There is a new Marriott being build right next door but the workers were quiet. If you stay here while construction is still going on you could request a room on the opposite side. Cleaning staff very friendly!!

Room Tip: All the room are the same price every day of the week, so why stay somewhere where they raise the pr...

Try someplace else unless you want an early wake up call (the heavy construction 10 feet from our bed) began before 7 am, even on Saturday), the mold was pervasive (even after I pointed out the leak under the sink - which they fixed - the mold continued to perfume our unit even with he best efforts of the cleaning crew). Changing the a/c filter might have helped. They did work on the windows so that we could open a few of them, but that and the fan (one speed - high) running continuously was the only thing that made this tolerable. The mold set off my allergies and we had to leave early.
There is a big difference in the units. We were traveling with friends whose unit was larger and did not smell of mold. There's was also farther from the street and construction noise. Wi-Fi was intermittent and most of the time the office was staffed by a young woman who could do nothing but "take a message for the owners."
The final straw was a large cockroach greeting me early on our last morning there.
There is a huge, new motel going in next door (which will tower over these ground floor units) and I suspect the owners have decided not to invest anything in the property, but sell it when the new Holiday Inn (?) is complete.

Room Tip: as far from the street as possible. The traffic continues all night on the one road north/south. B...

I am the owner responding to you. I was also the person who checked you in . I was also the person you handed the full size paper filled with your complaints the following morning at 9:01. By mid afternoon to your own admission the "problems" you had were all taken care of.

Also we take what our guests tell us to heart. After you checked out of your room we had it inspected for mold and none was found.

Your friends who were in room #9 had the exact same size room as you, all of the units with two double beds are the same layout.

After you check-out early, in your husbands words, " your were having back and neck problems that needed to be taken care of by your own doctor", we bent our policy and refunded you entirely.

.And as people say, you can't choose your neighbors! But are happy that Marathon is growing.

1950's design with zero upgrades since then. A terribly worn out place that charges 2014 rates as if it was the Hilton. Try to avoid this place if you can! Be forewarned! All this place needs is a bulldowzer.

I am sorry to hear that you were unhappy with your stay. The Keys are a very unique location that is expensive to stay. Most of our guests return for the 1950's charm.

While my wife and I have only been there twice, my daughter and her family have been visiting for years. I have heard her tell us how nice it is in the keys and after her inviting us for all of those years, we finally decided to go two years ago. Many would not consider this a 5 star luxury resort, but it is fantastic for what it is...a sportsmans paradise. great pool, great boat marina, ample space to clean your catch, and right in the center of dozens of nice restaurants. Also great location for access to the gulf or ocean. Also appreciate the effort Tanya and Chad go through to insure that your stay is enjoyable. Can't wait to go back....every year!! Rocky

Nice little Motel! Rooms are almost like mini apartments with full kitchens and bathrooms. Hours are limited for checkin but they were able to work around my schedule. A great little get away without all the hustle and bustle of Key West, nice place to just relax.

I was glad to read that you enjoyed our little piece of paradise! You are right, Marathon is a nice stop before you get to Key West if you are looking for some relaxation.

This was our second visit to Blue Waters Motel. The rooms are clean, fairly spacious, and comfortable. However, the rooms are a bit out dated and pricey for the quality. For $165 (including tax), I feel all windows should operate and there should not be visible rust on the side of the refrigerator. And this rust was not a small spot. It nearly covered the entire side of the refrigerator. Come on owner. Really? If you do not want to replace the entire unit, at least spray paint over the rust. We like the location. It is close to the Old Historic 7 mile bridge which is nice for walking, running, or biking. And kayak or boat rentals are close. I would recommend this motel to those of you who are looking for simplicity and location.

Thank you for your repeat business. While traveling in our high season in the Keys, our rates are higher than at other times in the year. Maybe you might think about coming September or October time when are rates are lower! Would love to have you again.
