We were kicked out to the street on Dec 31,2008 , due to an unfortunate fire at the Hotel, My family and me were on the street during the 12' oclock New Years Eve celebration, in our bathrobes, about 2am in the morning Jan 1,2009 we were finally let back in to our rooms, being tired and disscusted, we went to sleep and checked out at 830 am on Jan 1,2009 ... Our total vacation was ruined and we had to drive to Daytona to get a hotel,I reached out to both the hotel and American express to try to get all of my money back ,after going back and forth with Cheeka and Amex ... Amex could not help and I was charged for my Trip ....They were rembersed from there insurance company, two fold but found it in there hearts to ruin my New Years Eve and then charge me for it....Very Bad Business Practices.......................

My husband and I stayed here for a long weekend getaway from the kids. I always check hotels now on this site, and read the good and bad and note that a lot of times there are silly complaints, but the complaints about this resort do hold true. I would still return, but would be cautious about how much it costs. First, when we checked in our room was not ready, and even though we had set up an early check in, the front desk never called us to tell us it was ready. Ok, expected. Check in is at 4 - cannot really complain. However, we booked one of the nicer, newly renovated rooms. Not what we got. Our room was in extremly poor shape - so much so that the tile around the bathroom area was broken and cracked. There were many other problems with the room. The staff felt that since they gave us a room with an ocean view, rather than the room we were supposed to get with a resort view that this should make up for the poor condition of the room. I disagree.

As for the staff, they were not what one would expect from this resort. The attendant at the adult only pool was extremly rude. In fact, when we went to check out of the cabana we had rented she screamed at us in front of the other guests because we had apparently not checked in properly. I cannot express how unprofessional and uncalled for the actions were.

The food was overpriced, but good. There is a limited selection. One evening we checked in for dinner at the restaurant, our table was not ready. We were told to wait at the bar. (The resort was fairly empty). An hour later, we went to check again on our table and found out that they had forgotten about us. They gave us our table, with an apology. That was it. No offer of "can I buy you a drink for such poor service" - nothing like that.

The spa was nice, but highly over priced. But I would probably go back there too.

We too complained to management, and also were offered breakfast vouchers. When we got our survey in the mail, I answered it providing all of this information. No-one ever responded. I sent a long letter to management. No-one ever responded. Being that there are so few places in the keys such as this to stay, I don't think they care.

All in all, the resort is very pretty and an enjoyable place to visit. However, I would hesitate to pay a high price per night, knowing that services are limited and if I have any problems, they are likley to go unaddressed.

My new wife and I stayed at the Cheeca Lodge over Christmas 2008 for part of our honeymoon in the Florida keys. We stayed in the Beech front bungalow which was in good condition apart from the bathroom which had missing/cracked tiles in places. The bungalow has wonderful views out to the sea however I must confess to being extremely disappointed about the very loud sweeping/mowing of the beech at around 6:30 each morning.
The staff are very hit and miss the check in staff seemed to look down their noses at us as we booked in, many where exceptionally unhelpful, uninterested, one restaurant waitress actually forgot to put our meal order in?? However some of the staff are exceptional professional and helpful particularly the pool staff and the valets.
The restaurant was being remodelled when we got there, once it was completed the food was awful. Please save yourself some time and never take the buffet, the Christmas day buffet was the worst I could imagine, cold, not protected from flies, left out most of the day. And the fish buffet was only slightly better due to being served indoors. When ordering off the menu we found the food to be of average quality however very overpriced for the area in comparison to local restaurants
I must agree with another reviewer here concerning the behaviour of other guests which seems to be forgiven due to their supposed wealth. A family started throwing a football around the restaurant area while other guests were eating and was allowed to do this!!
This resort should be perfect it certainly is in a fantastic setting however it is let down by poor staffing and an attitude of couldn’t care less and do not seem interested in repeat business

We only managed one night, but I cant wait to go back for more. Great setting with lovely bright rooms in fresh seaside style. A definite cut above the rest with all the benefits the Florida Keys can give, good food and plenty of other great places to try. We chartered a boat for half a day and loved every minute exploring with a great lady guide.

Although the lobby has been nicely updated, our room was terrible, with a broken refrigerator, shabby furnishings, and stained sink and tub. The pool was crowded and the jets in the hot tub worked only intermittently. Service at breakfast was insulting; when I ordered a bowl of fruit rather than the buffet, I was served partly rotted strawberries and melon chunks. Nothing of the former style of the place survives.

Management response from Rhonda Whitfield, Director of Sales & Marketing
(Management representative)
Apr 3, 2009
Dear ssafari,

I was extremely distressed when I read your review. Our goal is for each and every one of our guests to enjoy their stay and become part of the Cheeca family. Did you speak to a manager during your stay to allow us the opportunity to offer you a solution? Cheeca’s management and staff are available 24 hours a day to guests who need assistance.

You mention that our lobby had been nicely upgraded, however, at the time of your stay (last year in March 2008) our lobby had not yet been updated. It was just before the fire in December 2008 that we introduced sit down check-in and beautiful new West Indies styled mahogany furnishings in the lobby. In response to your comments about the guestroom, please note that the majority of our guestrooms were completely renovated in 2005, however, there are a handful of rooms that were not. Although these “Traditional” category rooms are older, they are in good repair, having received new paint, carpets, artwork, soft goods, premium pillow-top mattresses and plasma screen televisions like our newer rooms. Admittedly, the furnishings and bathroom fittings are older, but they are well maintained. As such, the Traditional rooms are priced much lower than our Deluxe rooms – as much as 50% lower! These rooms offer an opportunity for guests on a budget to still enjoy Cheeca’s 27 acres of world-class amenities such as The Spa at Cheeca surrounded by poolside butler-serviced cabanas, 6 tennis courts, 9 holes of golf, water sports and excursions, two fresh water pools, salt water snorkeling lagoon, and much more.

We purchase only the highest quality locally grown fruits and vegetables so I was astounded to read of your experience at breakfast. If any sub-par product had managed to make its way out of the kitchen and it was brought to the attention of our servers, we should have immediately replaced it. Cheeca Lodge & Spa has been awarded the AAA 4-Diamond award for dining and we take great pride in the quality of our food & beverage. When Cheeca re-opens its doors later this year, we will once again be offering innovative regional cuisine as well as the Florida Keys’ freshest sushi and eclectic selection of wine and sake at our newest addition, Nikai.

Please check our website periodically for updates on our re-opening and the upgraded services and amenities we have in store for our guests.

Sincerely,
Rhonda Denise Whitfield
Director of Sales & Marketing
