“Tropical Paradise in Islamorada”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2013

Cheeca Lodge Is a well located tropical paradise on the upper Florida Key of Islamorada if you are wise enough to select the accommodations in the main building you will be surrounded by contemporary chic luxury. The rooms are very large and well appointed. There is a large enclosed bath tub located on thre extra large terrace overlooking the Atllantic. I know nothing about the other accommodations which are separate buildings bungalow type. I've heard from other guest "they need some work" The on site restaurants are good and the Spa is very functional.
A lovely resort to relax and unwind.

Room Tip: The main building is the way o go if it fits your budget

We took pleasure in your lovely review. Cheeca Lodge truly is the crown jewel of the Florida Keys. Thank you for your praises for our accommodations in the Main Lodge. We are giving a large inventory of our accommodations outside the lodge a full makeover, refinishing and replacing room amenities where needed. We are glad you enjoyed our restaurants and spa, and we invite you back for a return visit in the very near future.

We stayed at Cheeca from July 10-14th. It was our first time here and we had a wonderful time. Upon arriving, the resort is very impressive. The landscaping and pathways are gorgeous and the entrance is 5 star. We arrived before the check in time. A courteous staff member and glass of champagne greeted us and our suite was ready early.

My first impression of the building (600) was that the location was great. Not a long walk from the main building, pools and beach. As I checked out the room, the kitchen was very nice, with stainless appliances and granite counters. This was a Luxury Lagoon View Suite and the view was beautiful. The room overall was on the dark side and the furnishings were showing wear and tear. I noticed that the living area rug looked like it needed a major cleaning or better yet, replaced. The bathroom was very large and nice. Overall, it was not as new as the photo on the website.

After spending some time in the room, we discovered several maintenance issues. The door to our room did not close tightly and did not lock unless slammed several times. We went out to dinner the first night thinking that the door was locked and returned to find it open. The housekeeper had come in for turn down service and didn't know to check that the door was shut. I called the front desk and maintenance arrived in minutes to fix the problem. Nothing was missing in the room. Along with this we had a short list of annoying issues: phones didn't work unless you unplugged and replugged the jack in the wall, no switch on one of the lamps, no bowls in the kitchen...) All of these issues were tended to promptly and everyone was apologetic, but it was an inconvenience.

For this level of resort and price point, I was very disappointed in the over all cleanliness of our building and room. The stairwell was a mess with a broken cup with food in it on the steps for our entire stay (even after I told the front desk multiple times), garbage can in the stairwell was disgusting, the sofa sleeper mattress was horribly uncomfortable and our roll-a-way bed had the springs almost poking through. The king bed linens were thin and seemed old (although the bed was comfortable.) We expected it to be nicer.

We had such a great time outside of the room that we plan on going back. The staff is very professional and polite. The food and drinks were amazing and the location couldn't be any better. I hope that Cheeca does some upgrading of the rooms so we can book our next stay.

P.S. Big shout out to the security man (I think his name was Reggie) for taking us by golf cart and picking us up from the grocery store across the street. He's the best!

Room Tip: I would stay in the main building next time or request the newest, cleanest room in the 500 or 600 s...

We held our daughter's destination wedding at the Cheeca Lodge & Spa last month. It was an experience that we'll cherish forever and none of our guests will soon forget. All the events throughout the weekend came out perfect: the flowers, the music, the food, the environment....all first class.
One of the main reasons for the great experience was Charlene Lopez, the event coordinator. She reviewed every possible detail as if it was her own wedding. The whole staff was always making sure to try to accommodate all of our requests.
The Sunday brunch at the Lagoon Beach was truly picture perfect. The selection of fruits and variety of food items was impressive. The sunset wedding ceremony next to the ocean, between palms, was spectacular.
We stayed in the main building in one of the ocean view suites and it was an invitation to total relaxation.
It was a great weekend and I would recommend this property.

Room Tip: The ocean view rooms in the main building are just awesome, with their own private jacuzzis and balc...

My family has stayed at Cheeca once before, and we went back last week. Beautiful property, great stay and overall a great experience. It is a bit expensive, so we never ate at the restaurants on property. But, since there are so many great places to eat in the area -we got to explore new and wonderful restaurants. Any questions on local attractions - ask Earl at the gatehouse. Earl is personable, friendly, informed and just terrific to guests - he deserves 5 stars!

We did have one disappointing service issue, the elevator to our building stopped working and stayed out of service for two days. As we were checking out, we had to drag everything down the stairs. Very inconvenient

It was a pleasure having you and your family back to Cheeca. We are delighted you had an overall great experience and we appreciate your comments about Earl, our friendly and very popular gatekeeper. We apologize profusely for the inconvenience caused by the elevator – a bellman would have been happy to help you with your luggage! We certainly hope you will plan a third visit in the very near future.

We recently stayed 4 days at the Cheeca Lodge and Spa in beautiful Islamorada, Fl. While I've vacationed in the keys many times over the years, this was my first time at Cheeca. First the good: Very nice rooms, grounds, hotel, pool, and beach areas. Staff was attentive and curteous, and for the most part our stay was excellent. The not so good: The food from the Atlantic's Edge restuarant was lousy. The food was way over priced for the quality and the waiters seemed to be new and in training.I did not eat at Nikai, or Lemoncello, so i can't speak to them. We also experienced a very slow and confused group of bartenders at the Tiki Bar, (10 minutes to make a drink?) with about 8 patrons at the bar??? They were polite and appologetic, but at these prices, you would expect a lot more. I know the Cheeca has a long and prestigious history and everything, but something was a little off for what is supposed to be a first class resort. When people pay $300+ per night, they expect attention to detail, and especially food on par with prices - $100.00 for lunch is ok, but don't serve run of the mill fries with a lobster grilled cheese....also is it too hard to replace the bathrobes in our room after the first night? I even called to have new ones brought up-nothing. I will stay there again, but will continue to eat at other establishments, which are all close by. I want to stress that the staff was polite at all times and that because of that, I will come back. We did not get a chance to use the Spa services, but did take the snorkel trip which was great, and they have bikes and kayaks and fishing poles to use included with the room. I was able to charter a fishing boat with some friends during our stay, which was awesome, and we brought in a lot of Mahi-Mahi. Of course this really enhanced the trip!

Room Tip: Golf Course view rooms were very quiet and a little less than the ocean view of course.

It was nice to hear that you will stay here at Cheeca again in the future, and we will welcome you back with open arms! We are delighted you liked your accommodations, grounds, pool and beach. We were very happy to hear you found our staff to be polite, attentive and courteous, and your stay to be excellent. That’s fantastic that you enjoyed your snorkeling and fishing trips and had a great day on the water. That’s what it’s all about!
We were very disappointed to learn that the Atlantic’s Edge restaurant did not meet your standards, and we apologize that you were unhappy there. This restaurant holds the 2013 AAA Four Diamond Award, and we truly believe our menu prices are comparable to other restaurants of this caliber in South Florida. We take your comments to heart, and will use them to improve and enhance our overall guest experience. We look forward to your next visit, and thank you for writing.

Very nice hotel, but for the price I expected just a bit more.

We were there over the holiday weekend and you could tell the staff was a bit overwhelmed. The breakfast buffet ran out of plates, silverware, napkins and the food was sub-par. Ordering cocktails, getting towels, etc. took longer than it should have. Dinner orders would get just slightly messed up. Games, books, DVDs in the Rec room weren't the greatest; old, beaten up, missing stuff, etc. Bathroom needed minor repairs. Each by itself isn't the end of the world, but when all put together, made me realize that I was paying for a 5 star resort, but receiving 3 1/2 star service and quality of offerings.

A huge miss is with the Spa. I don't understand resort spas that don't offer mani/pedi services. They are losing quite a bit of revenue. I would have been willing to overpay for a pedi since I didn't have time to get one before we left home. But, oh well, their loss.

I guess they can charge the rates they do, but not quite live up to expectations, because there isn't too much competition in the area.

Again, a very nice place, but when you're charging Ritz prices patrons expect the Ritz...

We appreciate your feedback, and are happy you found Cheeca to be a very nice hotel. We think Cheeca’s rates are comparable to other resorts of our caliber in South Florida. We are quite disappointed that our price to value did not meet your standards. Our mission here at Cheeca is to deliver the ultimate vacation experience for each and every guest, and we sincerely apologize for the shortcomings during your stay. We truly feel our rates are competitive with other South Florida resorts, but you have our word that we will strive even harder to meet and exceed our guests’ expectations. Thanks again for writing.

I have stayed several times at Casa Morada with my wife and opted for a family vacation with my two teenage sons and wife at the Cheeca Lodge. The resort is better than average but not excellent. There are many nice features. Stayed in a king suite by the lagoon. Very spacious with a nice bathroom and kitchenette. The kitchen came in handy for quick breakfast before we headed out early for fishing. The suite overlooked a picturesque lagoon and the screened in porch provided a nice area for our evening dominoes game. Now the downside to the room. There were maintenance issues that an excellent facility would address promptly- loose door molding, slowly draining bathroom sink, broken lock on door, small hole in bathroom wall. Not anything that prevents an enjoyable time but less than excellence. The grounds are beautiful and even in the heat had great strolls with my wife. The walks are even nice at night with all the torches. The adult pool was wonderful but needed to be over 18 to use. The family pool is too small and really is less appropriate to mix teens with small children. The pool areas are clean but a mishap in the family pool with a young child appropriately closed the pool for our last two days. we could then use the adult pool with our sons and had a better experience. Other readers have noted service issues and I agree that the resort needs to address this concern. Personnel do not seem like they want to go out of there way to make guests happy. For example, the adult pool ran out of towels two days at 330PM. We were never offered any options by the attendant-just a shoulder shrug with a curt "we are out of towels". Never acceptable in my view. So why the very good rating- the setting, activities, large room, and generally relaxing atmosphere makes up for shortcomings. However, if we visit as a couple we will return to Casa Morada.

Room Tip: Spa rooms are very nice and quiet

We are giving a large inventory of our accommodations a full makeover, and refinishing and replacing room amenities in rooms like yours. We sincerely apologize that our free-form pool had to be closed during your stay and are investigating more immediate solutions for the mishap you mentioned. We also apologize for the shortage of towels at the Spa Pool and are working very hard to solve this issue.
