“A Little Gem in Islamorada, FL”

Chanticleer South

My husband and I spend every winter in Islamorada and are thrilled to have Chanticleer South at our doorstep. The food is unfailingly fresh and is individually and beautifully prepared by Chef Jean-Charles. There is always fresh local seafood on the menu as well as more traditional French entrees. These are accompanied by a short, and reasonably priced wine list. You are greeted by the charming hostess Cecile who is helpful and knowledgeable. Do not forget to order the dessert soufflee.

We had dinner there in Feb 2007. It was the best dinner we had on our Keys trip. The food was excellent with great sauces. The atmosphere was casual as you would want in the keys. The chef after dinner gave us a tour of the kitchen. the whole experience was excellent.

“Chef Berreut is over the hill”

Chanticleer South

We had an unexpectedly poor dining experience at Chanticleer South this evening. There were a few good dishes on the menu but the majority were mediocre. The duck was very salty and tough, and the vegetarian plates (ordered in advance) were simply steamed vegetables - a very poor showing for an expensive French restaurant.
When there was a problem with the wine, the waitress smelled it and told us it was OK. This has never happened to me before.
But the crowing event of the evening was when the chef came out of the kitchen, after we had paid the very high bill ($700) and was abusive telling us that we did not know what we were talking about and that we needed to travel more!

My husband lived in France for 7 years. He loves this place. It is the a French Resturant that does not try to Americanize the food. Love food in Lyon. especially the old French love the Chanticleer.

“changes for the better”

Nowhere are the changes overtaking the Keys more evident than at this minuscule, finely appointed restaurant in Islamorada. For twenty years the space was occupied by Manny & Isa’s, known for its homey Cuban fare and key lime pie. Now the chef and proprietor is transplanted Nantucket restaurateur Jean-Charles Berruet, who left the frigid North and headed south to cook his classically oriented, slimmed-down French cuisine. Foie gras with dried fruit compote is appropriately rich and decadent, but coq au vin is light, the tender bird plucked from a pot at your table and served with mushrooms and bacon shards. There is even a selection of artisanal cheeses and delightfully airy soufflés, plus a wine list that’s a trove of exciting French and Californian bottles.
